What is JrPLEWA?
Home
During the 2001-2002 school year, the Junior Pennsylvania Lake Erie Watershed Associaton, also known as JrPLEWA, recieved a $27,000 Growing Greener grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.  Since it's beginning, JrPLEWA students from high schools throughout Erie County have been collecting information about their subwatersheds and designing projects that concentrate on the protection, the restoration, and the sustainable development of the Pennsylvania Lake Erie Watershed.  According to the JrPLEWA Mission Statement:

"JrPLEWA provides educational opportunities in the Lake Erie Watershed, especially ones that are related to nonpoint source pollution.  JrPLEWA implements action plans to make positive changes in the Lake Erie Watershed."

Every school that participates in JrPLEWA monitors a subwatershed; records data about the physical, biological, and chemical characteristics of the subwatershed; presents this data to the other schools that participate in JrPLEWA; and promotes awareness about the necessity of protecing the watershed.
