*Shinya*

Shinya watched carefully as Kyo slept in his bed at the hospital. The nurse came in quietly and checked his vitals, like she always did at noon, just before she went on a lunch break. She didn't say anything to him, having become used to his being there at all hours, never tiring, never resting, barely speaking, hardly daring to leave the room for fear that Kyo would wake up while he was gone.

"Wake up, Kyo. Wake up. We've got too much left to do for you to be in a coma forever..." He trailed off then, searching for the right words to say.

Again, Shinya failed. He lifted Kyo's limp hand in his and pressed the back of Kyo's hand to his lips for a brief, heartfelt kiss.

Suddenly a quiet knock on the door was heard. Startled, Shinya dropped Kyo's hand onto the bed. Apologetically, he patted it. "Come in," Shinya called out. The door knob turned slowly and was hesitantly opened, then there stood Kaoru.

His deep gold hair looked damp from the shower still-- or was it raining outside? Shinya didn't know. His eyes narrowed, expressing displeasure, maybe even anger.

"Kaoru."

A nod was the initial response from Kaoru. "Hey Shinya," he said finally. Then Kaoru looked at the small, pale figure on the bed, "Has he woken up yet?"

"No."

That word was spoken coldly and there was a silent 'no thanks to you' after it. It was quite clear that everyone blamed Kaoru for Kyo's suicide attempt. Even little Shinya.

Shinya stared at Kaoru and wondered why he'd come. After all, he hadn't come to visit before. 'Four days...Why now? Guilt eating away at you, Kaoru?' Shinya wondered pessimistically.

He noticed then that KAoru was still looking at Kyo. There was a deep sadness in his eyes, and...something else. Kaoru must have felt his gaze because he turned suddenly and looked Shinya in the eyes. "You will call me when he wakes up, won't you? Please Shinya?"

Uh-oh. Kaoru was pleading. Sympathy wormed its way into Shinya's heart and try as he might, he still complied.

"Yes. Yes I will, Kaoru."

The said man smiled in relief and began to walk away. "And Kaoru?"

He turned back and looked at Shinya. "Hm?"

"Don't worry. Everything will be okay," Shinya said, feeling that the older man needed to hear these words. Kaoru gave him a smile of gratitude, and hugged the teensy drummer quickly. "Thanks, Shin=chan." Then the guitarist left the hospital.

*Kyo*

Light at the end of the tunnel. He'd always thought it was some sort of corny joke. Hahaha. Guess not.

It had been what he'd seen. Maybe the reason people always talk about the 'light at the end of the tunnel' shpiel was that when they've had a near-death experience that was what they saw. Except backwards. They all got confused and thought they were moving forwards, when instead they were going back to their bodies, to the lives awaiting them.

Kyo could hear Shinya talking again. "Kyo," he was saying, "Kyo, you have to wake up so I can tell Kaoru you're okay. He's so worried, we're all so worried."

'Shinya,' Kyo wanted to say, 'I'm okay, really. Stop worrying.' He wanted to open his eyes, but he didn't seem to have enough energy. Poor Shinya, he'd been there the whole time with him. It made Kyo feel less lonely that he would've in that sterile pit.

Die and Toshiya had been visiting every afternoon too, so far. Except for today, that is. Today was also the first day Kaoru had come. Kyo felt unbearably touched and would've cried, had he been able.

He felt tears running in rivulets down his arm. Shinya...was Shinya crying? Oh man...Kyo wasn't prepared for this. He hadn't expected Shinya to begin being so emotional. Toshiya, yes; Die, maybe; Shinya, no.

He remembered the first time Toshiya had come to visit him. The door had been wrenched open, and there were a few running steps heard before a weight was flung onto Kyo's limp form. Totchi had been sobbing hysterically. Gently, Shinya had pried Toshiya off of him and coaxed him into siting in a chair. Totchi was holding Kyo's hand, mutting broken apologies despite the fact that he had done nothing wrong. It was Kyo who had hit Toshiya, not the other way around.

Still, Kyo wasn't surprised. Hara Toshimasa was known to be a profoundly emotional creature. Sometimes that was all he operated on. Daisuke's first visit had been different, yet very similar.

He had walked into the room very quietly, very calmly. nothing like the exuberant 'Die' people saw onstage. He had sat in the chair next to Kyo's bed and after a long silence, said only one word. "Why?"

Die had leaned down and pressed the cool skin of his forehead to Kyo's even-cooler forearm and stayed that way for a very long time until one by one, warm droplets of moisture found their way out of his eyes and onto Kyo's arm.

Shinya hadn't cried. Not once, so far in the past four days. Now Kyo could feel the bed shaking from the force of his tears. The sobs were silent, stifled at first, but Shinya knocked his elbow, causing one choked, painful sob to be wrenched out from his throat.

Then it was like the cork which had been plugging the hole in the dam feel away, allowing the compromised structure to crumble, and crumble was what Shinya did.

Kyo wanted so badly to make his friend stop crying, wanted to stroke his hair and comfort him, to tell him it was okay... Frustration filled every fiber of his being.

Then light flooded his sense and his eyes were open, staring at the drop-ceiling of the hospital. He looked down and there was Shinya's collapsed form dripping crystalline tears onto his cloth-covered chest.

"Shin-...chan..." Kyo croaked out, voice scratchy due to disuse.

Shinya gasped and shot up, looking into Kyo's dark eyeys. "Kyo!" He cried and threw himself back down to hug the petite vocalist. Slowly Kyo's arms came around him., Kyo steadily relearning how to use his limbs.

"Kyo, I-- we thought-- oh my God." Shinya explained rather brokenly.

"Shinya, gomen nasai." Kyo blurted out the only thought that had been running through his head the entire time he was comatose. Shinya sat up, shocked. "Kyo, you have nothing-- I mean nothing-- to be sorry about."

"But I-- I made you worry." Kyo looked so distraught then, like a little kid, that it was all Shinya could do not to pull Kyo into his arms and call him a kawaii little teddy bear. (Whic h would only serve to piss the vocalist off immensely.)

"It's okay, Kyo. Everything's fine now," Shinya told him and smiled brightly for the first time in days. "Now, I've got to call the others." Shinya stood up slowly and hit the page button.

A nurse came in a moment later, eyes widening at the sight of Kyo awake. She quickly began to take his vitals, and Shinya left the room to begin making endless rounds of phone calls to family and friends.
