| 1795: Keats is born October 31st, near London. John was the first born child of Thomas (the headkeeper at a stable) and Frances Jennings Keats. 1797-1803: The birth of Keats' four siblings: George in 1797, Thomas in 1799, Edward in 1801 (dies in 1802), and Fanny in 1803. 1803: Keats begins attending school in Enfield. 1804: Keats' father is killed in a horse-riding accident. His mother disappears for a short time and later remarries, meanwhile children live part-time with their maternal grandparents in Enfield. His grandfather dies within a year, so children move to Lower Edmonton with their grandmother. 1805: Lawsuits over the estate. This leads to much of Keats' issue with money and "fear" of it. 1809: Keats starts to become interested in reading and the literary arts. 1810-1811: Keats' mother dies of tuberculosis. He starts an apprenticeship with an apothocary in Edmonton. 1814: Keats starts writing his first poems--"Imitation of Spenser", "On Peace", and "Fill for me a brimming bowl." His grandmother dies in mid-Dec. Richard Abbey gains control of family estate and is named the guardian of the children. Abbey limits the access the Keats' children have to money from their family's estate. Abbey also begins to discourage Keats from a career in writing. 1816: Keats' first poem is published in the Examiner. Later in the year he decides to abandon his medical training and devote his energies to poetry writing and studying of other poets/writers. 1817-1818: He publishes his first book of poetry with limited success. Goes on a 4-month walking tour around the UK (which has a large impact on his writing). Studied at Oxford for ~1 month, where he contracted a VD (probably gonorrhea). Writes "Endymion." Keats' brother Tom dies; family starts separating. First meets Fanny Brawne. 1819: Continues writing; many of the odes. This establishes Keats in his status as a great poet. Becomes engaged to Fanny, but cannot afford a wedding. He first notices signs of tuberculosis. 1820: His health begines to decline rapidly. Decides to travel to Italy with painter and friend, Joseph Severn. 1821: Dies in Italy on February 23rd. |
