2007 Ride the Rockies

training journal

10 January
stairs at work
stopped every ten floors

17 January
stairs at work
stopped at 16 floors, then 10 more, 11 more, 12 more and final two

21 January
swept seven inches off the stairs and walkway at home
big mistake

25 January
stairs at work
stopped every 15 floors, then did 5 and 5 more when the girls caught up to me
(went back down two flights before final set of 15 so I could get in a full 15 at the top)

29 January
stairs at work
15, 15, 15, 16, 2 and 5 floors without stopping
added an extra floor at the top, then joined the girls again when they caught up

31 January
stairs at work
15, 15, 15 and 17
added an extra floor at the top again

4 February
2007 Ride the Rockies Route announced - Frisco to Frisco Steamboat Loop

8 February
stairs ALONE at work
25 floors (but wanted to stop after five!), rested less than 20 seconds, did 5 more floors, rested less than 20 seconds, did 10 more floors, rested two minutes while descending two floors, then climbed 20 floors
man, I was riding almost daily by this time two years ago
this year's winter isn't easily allowing that, but I'm NOT complaining!

10 February
25 miles
road bike (RB) on South Platte (SP) around Chatfield and back
first ride of season; saddle sore, but a relatively good ride
felt so good on the climb, tempted to do it a second time!
Brett said my stairs are improving my climbing speed on the bike

12 February
stairs at work
30 floors, then 27 floors; couldn't make that final floor
mailed in 2007 RTR registration

15 February
stairs ALONE at work again
40 floors, then down two floors and up 20 (21???) !
met construction workers on the top who informed me my count is off
all those days I thought I'd done 60 floors -- I actually did 61!
the construction workers told me they get paid to go up those stairs

17 February
2 miles
RB, South Platte
heard a noise from rear brakes while slowing at construction detour
turns out I need new brake shoes
IMMEDIATELY
so, unfortunately, I couldn't finish the ride

20 February
stairs ALONE at work again
30 floors, then 29 floors, then did a really stupid thing
walked all the way down because my aggression level after an unsettling phone call wasn't soothed by 59 floors of vigorous climbing
won't make that mistake again

21 February
stairs at work
59 floors non-stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24 February
26.1 miles
NEW BRAKE SHOES!!!
RB on SP around Chatfield and back
very, very windy, to the point of discouragement
had no inclination whatsoever to try to do the hill twice this time

27 February
stairs at work
59 floors nonstop!
met a girl going down who said she'd just done the stairs for the first time last week
she told me to stretch and stretch and stretch some more, or I won't be able to walk for two days

1 March
stairs at work
59 floors, then another 25 after a smooth elevator cruise to the bottom
there are 466 steps to the marked 23rd floor

3 March
6 miles cross-country skiing; Cottonwood trail between Harvard and Yale
some of those miles were carrying the skis across very thin snow!

6 March
stairs at work
59 floors in 20 minutes
that's all I had time for

8 March
stairs at work
59 floors, then another 38 after the elevator cruise to the bottom
35 minutes!

9 March
7 miles; MB Medano Pass
sand, water and snow made for a stiff workout
three laps in the pool, first time I've done that in nearly two years

10 March
2 miles hiking and scrambling, Penitente Canyon
six laps in the pool

11 March
3 miles hiking in fresh snow, Zapata Falls and Zapata Lake trails
we'd planned to MB all three days, but even the southern trails aren't ready yet

12 March
Well, this was a short-lived page.
We didn't get drawn.

Dear Cyclist:

I am truly sorry to inform you that your application for the 2007 Ride The Rockies was not selected in the lottery. As much as we wish we could include everyone who wants to ride, our concerns for safety on the road and comfort in the host communities are our first priorities.

When the lottery was conducted, we selected enough cyclists to compensate for cancellations. For this reason, we are not keeping a waiting list. The check for your application fee will be returned to you via U.S. Mail.

We truly appreciate your interest in Ride The Rockies and hope you will apply to join us next year.

Sincerely,
Ride The Rockies Staff
