NBC Presents: CONVENTION REPORT On Nov. 14, Jenny Munday, Mr. Cumming and I left John Rennie on a 400 mile trip. We went to Noranda, Quebec, for the Provincial Student Council Conference. We travelled by bus and it took us from approx- imately 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to get there. Travelling through La Verendrye park we were fortunate enough to see a Bull Moose on the roadside walking calmly into the woods. We had a blowout also but the tires have double layers, so it didn't matter. Upon arrival at Noranda High School we registered and were billeted in homes of Noranda stud- ents. On Friday, the Noranda High School Student Council Provincial Conference was opened by a "Personal taped message" by John D. Diefen- baker. In his talk, he extolled the virtues and, the potentail of youth in fluent cliche. Marcel Vesque, the Student Council President welcomed us officially to Noranda. Then a film "The Threatening Sky" was screened. A propaganda film, it told of the great Vietnamexe pro- tecting their home and country against the vicious imperialistic dogs: The Americans. It used Lord Bertrand Russel, the renouned philosopher and pacifist to play on our emotions by habing him des- cribe in vivid detail the atrocities of Mace and Nerphlm. (No mention of Viet Cong tortures) Unfortunately there was no descussion of this film. David Depoe, son of Norman, and member of the Company of young Canadians, talked in a non-gravelly voice about society in general and the working of democracy in particular. Then, with Depoe chairing, we talked about youth and teacher-board negotiations (no connection be- tween the two.) There was some movement to support the teachers but there appeared to be a lack of communication between, all factions and we didn't know who to support. Then we had lunch. An important fact to remember here is that we had bananas for dessert. In the afternoon we saw an amazing film: "The war game," a com- plete total shocker that left the room tltally silent for about one minute. It showed what the effects of a nuclear attack on Britain would be. Mrs. Pat Rearce, a commissioner on the CRTC and an ex-star Columnist talked about the film etc. It was interesting but then some idiot got up, called us all "a bit queer" and threw a banana into the arenal to show that we were all "Monkeys"! David Depoe took over from Mrs. Rearce. We got involved in a long drawn out arguement about School Newspaper censorship. Apparently, some editor of the Noranda High Newspaper printed an article written by someone else that cont- ained four letter words (like Love (?)) She was suspended, kicked off the news staff and wasn't allowed to attend the convention. There was even an editorial in the city paper about it! There was much opposi- tion to the treatment of the girl. That night a banquet was held at a motel in which the girl beside me said "Eek there's a live bug in my salad!" The waitress rushed over and whispered "sh! not alloud! The others will want one!" An old joke, but it's time. On Saturday we went on tours of the various mines. Very interest- ing; but dirty! We had lunch at the school. This time, to avoid another banana incident they gave us apples! Mr. C.W. Dickson, the associate deputy minister of Education gave a clinche talk on youth and education etc. Then he was grilled,in my opinion, rudely by a small clique on the P.S.B.G.M. Student Council that came to the convention prepared. There were interesting and intelligent question, but the answers weren't answers. He managed to go around all of them. He handled it all very well, though consider- ing that he didn't know very much about anything. Then, lo and behold the weirdo in the front row gave the mount Olympus. After another well-timed coffee break, Mr. Rod, Dewar gave an amusing talk on,(guess
