Next year our school will all be changed. It will start at 8:15 A.M instead of the usual 8:35 and end at 3:15 P.M instead of 3:10. There will be seven periods instead of 6. There will be either an other option or study period. I want to take German but Dad wants me to have a study period. Next year my options will be biology and home ec. In grade eleven they will be chemistry and Spanish. Mon May 29, 1967 Missed 3 and 4 periods because of awards assembly. They gave teachers awards to teachers who are leaving. To Mr. Bauer they gave a Playboy pin-up, to Mr. Buckingham a left-handed Monkey wrench, to Mr. Szekula a carton of pepsis, to Mrs. Gay a branch for her Twiggy clothes. Mr. Powter got a standing ovation by the students of John Rennie, a toupee for Mr. Parker, a box of animal crackers for Mr. Thurber, Teddy Bear for Mr. Wall, centennial apron for Mr. Waugh. Other teachers leaving are Mr. Cayne, Mr. Colby, Mr. Borras Tue May 30, 1967 Had a spare period because Miss Marsh was away. The Chinese pavilion at Expo was damaged by fire and won't be opened to the public until another month. The Kuwait pavilion is closed because of the war between Israel and Arab Nations. Wed Sep 6 1967 School started today. The teachers I got are: Homeroom - Mr. Livingstone, Home Ec - Mrs. Christie (cooking first), Biology - Mr. Einser, History - Mr. Wright, English - Mrs. Giddy, Math - Mr. Gay, French - Mr. LeMaistre. School starts at 8:18 We only get one gym period a week, there are two shifts for lunch, I'm in the first at 11:05. I have to go to Lakeside Heights School for Math and English. Brenda Purcell, Diane, Doreen Sinclair and Barb Bodmer and I went to Fairview Shopping Centre. Spent the afternoon there. Thurs Sept 7 1967 Stayed at school for lunch. Went to the civic centre with Barb Bodmer. There were 6 fire drills during the day for me. My locker number us 574. Bruce Martin isn't in any of my classes and I haven't even seen him. I hate school this year. There isn't any recess, school starts earlier, there's only one gym period, there are 2 lunch periods which are short. I never see Diane at all during school. We already got homework in English, Math and History. The combination on my lock is 20-0-14. I took a book out of the library "A Town That Died". I don't like the study period. It's impossible to study. Wed Jan 3 1968 We had to go back to school today. I hate every single minute of it. We had gymnastics with the boys in gym. We only had to do forward rolls, dive rolls, backward rolls and back extension. I went to the shops for lunch with Diane Wood and Barbara Bodmer. I handed in two book reports and 1 out of the 4 Character sketches we had to do for December 22. There was a cheerleading practise after school. After supper until 11:00 I worked on (and finished) the history term paper that was supposed to be handed in on Dec 22. It is 13 typed pages long. Headlines - Gazette = New Heart Transplant Successful. Words to a cheer: 1. There is a team that is Supreme, a team that's really on the beam, It's got the pep, it's got the steam. It's known as the Rennie team. 2. Let's GO team Let's Go team, Let's go, let's go, Let's go, Let's fight team Let's fight team, Let's fight Let's fight Let's fight Let's win team Let's win team, Let's win Let's win Let's win Let's go Let's fight Let's go Let's fight Let's win. Fri Jan 5 1968 Had biology in room 556. I said my french sujet in french class. I did really well and I think I might have gotten full marks. I cheerleaded at a basketball game after school between John Rennie and Beaconsfield High at John Rennie. We lost 41-31. Our cheerleading was so pathetic we might can it. After supper I went to the coffee house at the YMCA. I got in by saying I was Barb Baptist, who is a member. Mon Jan 29 1968 The winter carnival started today. There was a boys fashion show at noon and a volleyball game after school between the senior boys and teachers. I've started sewing in home ec. We can make either a shirt (man-tailored) or shirt dress and then anything else we want. I went skating after supper for an hour and a quarter. I came home, watched T.V. and did homework. I've been nominated for carnival queen but I don't want to enter. Tues Jan 30 1968 There was a boys baking contest at noon and a girls hockey game after school for the winter carnival. I got my biology exam back. I got 62/100 and 80% of that is 50 plus my class mark with is 17/20. So I'll get a 67% on my report card. I went down to the shops for lunch. 79% of the kids who wrote the grade 10 algebra exam failed it so the teachers are redistributing the marks (most people are being raised 20 marks). I went to gymnastics after school. I'm on the senior 1 team for intermurale basketball. Wed Feb 21 1968 Had a home ec test. Did gymnastics in gym. I got 10/25 on a geometry test. We were supposed to cheer at Beaconsfield High but we couldn't because we couldn't get a teacher to chaperone us because we would have had to go on the team bus. Why would we need a chaperone if we were only going to Beaconsfield High. We're starting a student's lounge in the cafeteria. The tables have been separated and you can sit anywhere. The kids who want to work go to rooms 209 + 409. Otherwords in the cafeteria you can do much anything. There are no teachers and kids are picked as monitors. KAOS Radio plays music and soon food will be sold. They've put a ping pong table and coke machine up and they're debating wether they will let us smoke or not. Fri May 3 1968 Handed in my dress to be marked. Went to the shops for lunch. All the invitations for the grad dance are finished. Now I have to make a list of the people coming from replies sent to the school. I got 16/20 on an algebra test which was one of the best marks. I went home instead of going to study hall. I watched a hockey game between St. Louis and Minnesota. The teams both had won 3 games. This was the deciding game to see who would play Montreal for the Stanley Cup. The score was 1-1 at the end of the games. Both goals were scored in the last 4 minutes of the game. St. Louis won the game in the 3rd minute of the 2nd period of overtime. I went to bed at the end of the 1st period of overtime so I didn't see the winning goal. I wish I could have seen it because the game was played in St. Louis and the spectators must have gone wild. Fri May 17 1968 It was dull all day and it rained a bit. Saw a movie called "L.S.D. Insight or Insanity" during lunchtime. I got 7/20 on an algebra test Wed Jun 5 1968 Didn't have any exams in the morning so I didn't go to school. Senator Robert Kennedy (President (the late) Kennedy's brother was shot while campaigning during the presidential elections. All we've heard all day is about the assassination. He was shot in the back of the head and is in very critical condition in a hospital. Mom told me as soon as I got up and I cried when I listened on the radio. I was dreading writing my history exams in the afternoon because I felt I knew nothing as the result of extremely little studying. The exam was easy and I think I did quite well. I've heard so much about today's assassination that I turn off the radio everytime it comes on the radio unless it's something new because I've heard the same thing over and over again. It went up to 85 degrees today. Wed Sep 4 1968 School started today. When I got there I found out I was supposed to be in Mr. Eisner's homeroom class in the biology lab (404) except my name wasn't on any list. So Mr. Eisner sent me down to the cafeteria. Alot of other kids (about 50) didn't have home rooms or schedules either. Schedules were done by computer and everything was a mess. Then all these kids started coming down to the cafeteria with mistakes in schedules and soon the cafeteria was full. School finished at 10:30 and everyone left. I had to fill out an option form again. I went upstairs and met Brenda Purcell and both she and Angela Lee had mistakes in their schedules. Brenda was given Spanish instead of Art. Again the cafeteria was full. Some kids got 2 lunches or 3 maths and mistakes like that. Diane was given 2 study periods, no N.A.L. and they put her in a grade 9 math class. I babysat, went to the store for Mom and made Date Squares. Fri Sep 6 1968 During second to last class I got my whole schedule changed. It used to be Chemistry (Phillips), Art (Zbik), French (Trip), Math (Reese), Lunch, English (McCrae), Study Hall, History (Wood). Now it's 1. Spanish (419) Azoulay, 2. French (215) Baugh, 3. Chemistry (219) Cooke, 4. and 5. double lunch, 6. english (413) McCrae, 7. history (502) Wood, 8. math (416) Gartshore Mon Sep 9 1968 Started off on my new schedule. I have Spanish with Mr. Azoulay, then French with Mr. Baugh, then chemistry with Mr. Cooke, then a double lunch, then English with Mrs. McCrae, then history with Mr. Wood, and Math with Mrs. Gartshore (nee Elliott). Didn't have chemistry today because of awards assembly. I have a new locker now - number 526, across from the chemistry lab. Diane got her schedule all changed again for the third time. First of all she was given two study periods, grade 9 math (she should be in grade 8) and no N.A.L. She got the schedule fixed but then the math class she was told she had was a French class and she's taking Art instead of N.A.L. Now with her new schedule she doesn't get any lunch on Tuesday. Fri Sep 13 1968 Had a double chemistry class so I didn't have a double lunch. Had gym today. Out class has about 5 grade 11's, some grade 10's and some grade 8's. Had an english test. Got 5/5. Got 26/30 on a geometry test. Went to cheerleading after school. There's going to be three squads, Senior, Junior and bantam. The girls who are trying out for senior and who don't make it, can then try out for junior. My legs are so sore I can barely move. I went to Angela Lee's for lunch. I've been getting tons of homework. About 2-3 hours every night. Wed Jan 8 1969 Before Spanish we were told that Mr. Azoulay was away so after rejoicing we got other books from our lockers and walked towards the cafeteria - who should we meet but Mr. Azoulay walking to class. That ended our spare. Took a short walk through a part of the new addition with Carol Eitenne, Brenda Purcell and Jane Walford during 2nd lunch. The new corriders are so much brighter and wider. Instead of hall lockers they have the lockers all together in a room like the gym lockers. We also saw the new gym. There's no windows in it, and it is very dull as the floors and walls are brown. We were divided in groups to do special projects in English on Lord of the Flies. My group, which consisted of Brenda, Winky Patterson, Angela Lee and Cheryl Martin, had to draw a map of what we thought the island looked like and then draw the map on the board using colored chalk. I must say that we quite outdid ourselves. Had a history test but I got 0/20 because I didn't write a single word. I didn't even know any bull to string. The question was about Bismark. I did study, but he only told us on Monday and that gave us two nights to study 5 chapters. I studied the first two chapters. I got 30/40, 16/20 on 2 other tests this term but this latest mark brings my class mark down to 50%. "Snow Chaos on South Shore" - "Struggle to Free Cars" - Star "Manhunt Focus as Killer's Car Found" - "Police Seek two in Double Slaying" - Gazette. Monday Jan 27 1969 Wrote geometry exam in the morning. I think I did rather good. I must have gotten at least 20/20 on my propositions but I lost 20 marks when I left out two out of three deductions. I couldn't get them at all. But Nobody I talked to got the deductions I didn't get. Went to the bank and took out $6 to pay for a chemistry book I lost. Went to the school, got the book. Studied chemistry in the afternoon and after supper. I only got up to chapter 6 and we had 13 chapters for the exam. Quebec Bids for British Investment - Star Flood Toll Mounts - 88 Lose Lives in California _Gazette Thurs Jan 30 1969 Had my algebra exam in the morning. It started late cause the buses didn't arrive till later. The roads were just a sheet of ice. I fell on the way to school and had to get a bandaid 'cause my knee wouldn't stop bleeding. I thought I did pretty well until I got to the problems. There were 3 problems totaling 20 marks and I didn't get any of them. "As Man and His World Dies" Drapeau Ponders His Future " Decision in a Few Weeks Mayor Hints at Retirement" -Star "Man and His World is Dead" "La Ronde Area to Remain Open" -Gazette Fri Feb 21 1969 Had a spare 'cause Mr. Azoulay was away. Mr. Baugh has a new kick - giving us dictees by a record. Had double chemistry lab. Went to the library instead of going to English to write a letter of application for the Teacher Training thing. Skipped gym to study for a math test. They were moving all the T.D. equipment to the addition and we're supposed to be in the addition next week. "Reds Rattling Sabres Near Nervous Berlin. Communist Convoys Reported Moving Around City" - Star "Arab Bomb Rips Packed Israeli Store" - Gazette Mon Feb 24 1969 New wings open and my spanish class is in room 485. We had to carry our desks to the new room. Lockers are being changed. I love the new wing. It's so bright, cheerful and colorful. The halls are wide but the bathrooms are small. The rooms are echoy. Library has a carpet, home ec rooms look like model home kitchens. For chemistry, we have to bring 25 cents to pay for our lab sheets. I don't mind paying 'cause it's only a quarter but it's the principle of the thing. We paid $7.50 at the beginning of the year and that was to pay for lab equipment. So I complained to Bruce McNiven, Student Council President. We went to the office to discuss this but no one was there. Complained to Mr. Cooke. Says he has nothing to do with it and we went to talk to Mr. Phillips but he wasn't in his class. Phillips class hasn't been told to bring in 25 cents. Went to the library during english. I have to do an essay on the Inquisition. My tooth ached so I went home for an aspirin before history. Had to phone Mom in Cook's office. Got back when there was only 20 minutes of history class left so I didn't bother going. Mrs. Gartshore changed our whole class around to break up kids who talk. Had a crisis during lunch. I was going to the counter to buy my lunch so everyone wanted me to get them something. I had to carry back 1 milk, 2 Princesses, 1 drumstick, one frosticle, 1 half moon, 1 meat pie, an ice cream sandwich, 3 straws and a fork plus change and purse. "Wants NU Leadership Issue Settled "Premier Asks Convention" Interim Leader's Personal Plans Not Known" - Star "Leadership Meet Urged by Bertrand" - Gazette Thurs Feb 27 1969 Changed our lockers. My new one's a brown one at the very end of the main hall on floor 4, the same number. I hate it there. It's so far away from everything. I have to do so much walking in so little time. It took all 1st period to change lockers and fix up my new one. We deliberately took this long and then we found out Mr. Azoulay was away so actually we thought there was no point in taking our time, but then he arrived so we just stayed at our lockers. Went to a gymnastic meet after school with Devon Leguillette. Lindsay Place, Mac and John Rennie participated. John Rennie seniors won. Went to St. Laurent after supper to watch a West Island Flyers games. It was a 2-2 tie so now they have to play until one team gets eight points and now West Island is winning 7-1. Sun May 4 1969 Studied french in the afternoon and watched the hockey game. Montreal won the Stanley Cup. Went to the Dairy Queen after supper with Devon Leguillette and then I studied for french orals again. May 7, 1969 Mr. Baugh was away so I went to the study hall and watched guys play cards. Mr Cooke was away too and then I had a double lunch. Went to dancing lessons after school. It was a practice for the grad march and traditional dance. Alot of kids were there. For the grand march we walk in the gym in couples and walk to the centre piece and split up in 2 couples and walked around the center piece and then we cross on the other side of the centerpiece and form an archway around the gym. Then we do the dance which is called greensleaves. Everyone walks around the gym for 8 steps and (in the set) the first 2 go under the second 2 and the second 2 go under the first 2. Then we do a pinwheel thing going clockwise for 8 steps and then the other way for 8 steps and start over again. Leslie Cameron and Annabel Lyman was in our set. It was so funny. Devon Leguillette picked me up at 6:00. The banquet was supposed to start at 6:45 at the Grand Salon. Walked around downstairs first and then we had to wait in an ante-room. Sat at table 2(right in front of the head table) with (clockwise)Brenda Purcell, Ron Peters, Sue Wilson, Patty Sewell, Janice Hutton, Geoff Walker, Carol Eitenne, Donna Beauchamp and Bob Gibson. After toasts we ate fruit cup, coffee, gingerale, pea soup, buttered string beans, ballotine of chicken chasseur, chateau potatoes, rolls and butter and baked alaska. Each table had to make up a lyrick about John Rennie ours was There were 280 grads from J.R. Who thought the Hilton was a bar To the Grand Salon they went The ladies and gents To get stoned on the gingerale. I made up all the lines except the 2nd line. Then someone from each table had to read the lymerick out loud though some tables did it all together. The table I thought was the best was the table that sang there's to the tune of our school hymn. Devon drove me, Joan Curry and Jane Walford home. Sat outside my place and talked for awhile. The class will and testament were useless. They were boring and unorganized though a few were really funny. I love seeing guys dressed up. Everyone looked just great. May 9, 1969 No school for grade 11's 'cause it's grad night day. Devon Leguillete and I went to Fairview. Got our boutenniers and I bought a small deoderant. Then we went to Devon's and stopped off at Lorne Grigsby's where he and Michael Bauman were washing Lorne's car. Then Devon and I went to the hairdresser. Michel, a man, did my hair and I don't like him at all. It cost $4. My appointment was for 1:00.While I was there so was Sue Elder, Devon, Paula Smith, Brenda Purcell, Pam Fane, Louise and April Cockle, Judy Hill, Gail Tower, Margaret Thompson. Took a taxi home about 2:45. Got dressed and put on make-up, got my purse ready etc. Lorne, Mike and Devon came at 4:30 which I thought was much too early. Mom took pictures of Lorne and I, Grandad and I, Mike and Devon, and then us 4 grads together. Lorne was wearing a blue jacket with a white turtleneck and blue medallion. He looked great but I didn't like the medallion. All the guys looked so good. Gave Lorne a white carnation and he gave a me pale yellow orchid. It was absolutely gorgeous. Devon and I didn't want to wear them 'cause they'd be crushed, so we kept them in there boxes. Went to Brenda Purcell's first but we were really early so we went to Sue Elder's but then we drove around first. Sue's was a coketail party. Put our corsages on there. Left about 5:30 and we went to Brenda Purcell's Punch Party. Alot of kids there but there was hardly any room. Left at about 6:00 for Cheryl Martin's. Had delicious punch there. Angela Lee looked really great. Rained on and off all the time. We'd walk into a party when it was raining but it'd stop when we leave or vice versa. It's unbelievable the trouble I had with my cape. Lorne had to hold on to it from behind. Then at 6:30 we left to go to Janet Henderson's Hors D'euerves party. Of everybody's hairdo's I liked hers the best - it really looked great. Didn't really stay there very long. Then we went to Jane Walford's buffet party. We just sat and didn't eat anything. We stayed at Jane's until about 7:20 and then we went to John Deakin's dinner party but we were rather early so we had to drive around first until John got there. About 20 kids were there for dinner. We sat boy-girl- boy and opposite our escorts. I had Steve Hersey on one side of me and Brent Brooks on the other side. We had sort of a stew with rice. It was delicious but I could only eat half of it and everyone finished theirs. Then we went to Donna Beauchamp's dessert party. From there we went to the school. We parked in the city hall parking lot, checked my coat and went into the gym. The theme was Alice in Wonderland. The gym was absolutely gorgeous. It had plastic hanging from the ceiling and around the gym. Went through the receiving line and met Lorne's parents. Mom and Dad were there. Mom and Dad met Mr. and Mrs. Grigsby. The Grand March was okay but the traditional dance was fun it was a farce. More than 100 couples were along the gym. We could've done better had there been no parents there. Did the Greensleaves with Gail Tower and Doug Murray. We ended up going down the middle of the dance floor. Then I danced the father-daughter/son-mother dance with Dad. Dad and I did pretty good. Then Lorne and I went downstairs to the smoking lounge. We were going to dance a few dances but Lorne went out and brought his car to the John Rennie parking lot. By this time it was pouring rain. By the time he got back everyone was leaving so we never did dance. Then we went to the Hilton - I guess it was about 11:00. Of the whole day that is what I liked best. They had gotten a room - 382. I guess about 50 people were there (not always at the same time) coming and going. There was a livingroom/diningroom, a bar, a bathroom and a bedroom. It was fantastic everyone was drunk. I had a glass of rum and coke. Did I ever have a good time. We left at about 1:15 - still pouring rain and went back to the school and the cabaret. The cabaret was called Goombay Cabaret and was an Hawaiian theme. Sat at a table with Susan Arsenault, Jock Fairbairn, Dave Redmond and Nicollette de Smit, Glen Abbott and Allison Birss. We were right beside the stage. Ralph Lockwood was there and gave out prizes after prizes. Lorne got a $5 gift certificate. At the cabaret I undid my hair and brushed it out as best as I could. I was sober too. There was the "Hawaiian fantasy" first. There was a guy with a guitar and a hulu dancer (too bad I couldn't dance like that.) The hulu dancer got Lorne, Bob Kenny and John Deakin up to dance with her. It was so funny. There was a couple folk singing from the show "Squeeze". I liked them. And the Raftsmen (I thought they were good too) played - they're from Cafe Andre. At 4:30 we went to Steve Hersey's. Had a glass of champagne there and that put me out of it again. At about 5:00 we went to the Hilton again. Not that many kids there this time. Stayed til 8:00. Went with Dave Redmond and Nicolette de Smit to Leslie McDonald's for breakfast. Actually we weren't invited but we just sat in the living room until about 8:30. Lorne drove me home. Talked to Mom and Dad and then went up to bed, put on my nightgown and fell asleep. I wanted to sleep for maybe and hour or two but I woke up at 4:00 when Devon phoned. Went to Fairview with Dad and bought some material for Mom for mothers day and a pattern. Went to Jane Walford's at about 9:30 (she drove) and stayed until 11:00. Joan Curry drove me home Tues May 20 1969 Mr. Einser hasn't been to home room for about two weeks. He's in the hospital for kidney infection or something like that. I never go to home room anyways. Talked to Simone de Smit in spanish class (she's going out with Ron McDougall). Had a spare in chemistry so I went to Angela Lee's to do some history studying but I didn't even open a book Listened to records, put makeup on. Stayed there for most of first lunch. Went to the library during second lunch to listen to this guy who is a deserter from the U.S. Marines after 8 months in Viet Nam. Skipped history and went home. Mrs. Gartshore was away so I didn't have any math. At 8:00 Devon Leguillette came and we went to Viking Park to see the midget game. Paul McDougall, Bob Phibbs and Russ Hiscock were there. But it poured rain so the game was called - good thing. Viking was making errors on every play. Devon and I went to the store and stuffed ourselves. Fri May 23 1969 Now the kids who'll be in grade 10 & 11 next year get to pick their own teachers and timetables. That's what they did during 3rd period so I had a spare. Had to go to class til 10:30 and then I was allowed to read. I was supposed to have double chemistry too. Went to the cafeteria. Yesterday I got a gash in my right hand thumb from the electric mixer and the band-aid came off. So in french I asked Mr Baugh if I could go get a band-aid and he wouldn't let me. Gave me a lecture in front of the class about the evils of band-aids and how old- fashioned he is about stuff like that. He let me go but no one was at the clinic. When I told him that he said "good". Skipped english class and phys.ed. Played cards in the cafeteria with Brenda Purcell, Jane Walford, Winky Patterson, Sue Elder, Kathy Elliott, Paula Smith, and Kirk Anderson and Lorraine Maine. Played elimination, hearts and rummy. Went home 'cause I skipped math. Devon Leguillette came at about 8:00 and we went to the Pointe Claire midgets baseball game at Viking Park. They were playing Verdun and lost 14-5. Pointe Claire has a useless team. The errors are unbelieveable (and funny). Lorne Grigsby, Jock Fairbairn, Brent Brooks, Scott Hall, Keith Guild, Paul McDougall, Gary Dickson were at the game. Devon and I went to her place and then to the Dairy Queen. After the game Mike Fidork, Gary, Devon and I went to the A&W. I had a mama burger. Devon phoned me after she got home. Tues Sep 16 1969 Went to school today. Walked there with Diane. Put my stuff in Devon Leguillette's locker. Homeroom is 558 with Mr. Wright Then I went to history in 405 with Mr. Buchanan. That guy really bothers me. We did about a quarter a page of notes. No one has history text books. Mr. Bongo talked about everything except history. Today one of the topics under discussion was sexual intercoarse in the hippie communities. had a spare next so I took the Fairview bus (it stops at the Windsor Arms Apts on Douglas Shand) at 9:45. Looked for the ballet slipper type shoe that I really want. I want black. But if there's navy I decided to take it. Well Villager's had black leather (I don't like patent leather) but no size 5 1/2. Lewis's had only navy but the smallest size was a 6 and that's too big. Took the next Pointe Claire bus and got back at 10:30. I had already missed 10 minutes of my english class with Weasel so I didn't go to the rest. Talked with Janice Damon, Devon, Carol Eitenne, Leah Lazell, and Sue Spencer in the Lounge. Ate lunch with Gary Page, Diane and Gail McEachren.
