| Bottom Turn: The turn made at the bottom of the wave to begin the ride. These must be powerful moves which enable the rider to establish direction of the ride. Cutback: The snapping motion that changes the surfers position toward the direction that they just came from. These are a vital element in every surfer's performance.Cutbacks reposition the rider into the nucleus of the wave. Down The Line: What the rider sees as he or she looks down the side of a wave after completing the bottom turn. Down the line surfing can be fast and exillerating. Floater: When the surfer rides the top part of the wave that is about to break. It is a complicated move, and is utilized carefully by judges in surf competitions. Off The Lip: Rebounding the surfboard off the breaking part of the waves and into the face of the waves. Also called "off the top" or "snaps". Shortboard: Surfboards that range in length from 5' to 7'6", they are used in high-performance contest-style surfing Longboard: Surfboards that are usually 9' and over, they are easier to paddle and catch waves with. Bail: To abandon or jump off of the board, usually without regard for the boards future. Bump: A swell Gnarly: Awsome and intimidating Grommet: Adolescent surfer Wipe Out: A fall, particularly a spectacular fall Bro: A buddy or a friend Green Room: Inside a full coverup tube Pearl: To go pearl diving, when the nose of your board becomes submerged under the water and the wave pushes the rest of the board over the nose, inculding the rider Squid: An unlikeable individual Sick!: excellent, top notch- describing a surfer, a stunt, or wave conditions Stoked: Geared up, full of enthusiasm, ready to go Thrash: When a wave lays a beating on you Bomb: An unseasonably large wave |
