| Mac Dre (born Andre Hicks) was born in Oakland, California, July 5th 1970. He was a San Francisco Bay Area based gangsta rapper who is considered one of the predcessors of the hyphy movement. Which is a style of music and dance from the San Francisco Bay Area. Mac Dre hailed for Vallego, California. His music gained popularity in the early to mid 1990s throughout the bay area, and eventually reaching national recognition through his independent record labels Romp and Thizz Entertainment. He was the creator of the "Thizzle Dance," a popular dance that holds no specific standard. After recording his first three albums, Mac was charged with conspiricy to commit bank robbery, he was sentences to five years of prison in 1992. In prison, Mac gained some notoriety by recording the lyrics to songs directly over the Fresno County Prison inmate phone. His album "Young Black Brotha" was a result of such recordings. A later album "Back 'N Da Good" was also made up of these prison recorded songs. After his release from prison in 1996, Mac Dre began releasing albums steadily, his audience was begining to grow, and hiphop stations were beginning to give his music more airtime. Mac moved to Sacramento, California where he began a label "Thizz Entertainment." Being an ectasy enthusiast, Mac Dre coined the term Thizz, which means to be high on ectasy. On November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot and killed while returning to his hotel after a performance in Kansas City, Missouri. A car pulled up to the white van which was carrying Mac Dre as well as other Thizz artists, and shots were fired. The van swerver off the road, and into a ditch where it ran into a tree. When they got to Mac Dre, he was dead from a gunshot wound. Some believe that Mac Dre was killed by Kansas City rapper, Anthony "Fat Tone" Watkins. In 2005, Watkins was murdered by Bay Area rapper, Mac Minister, in retaliation of the death of Mac Dre. In March 2006, Mac Minister was arrested by FBI officials. |
