| Overview: Lyme Disease is a bacteria that is transferred by ticks It is treatable, and rerely fatal (even without treatment) Symptoms: Early Chronic Rash (bullseye shaped) Some are the same as the earlier symptoms Fever Hallucinations Headache Bell's Paulsy (the drooping of the face) Fatigue Disabled nervous system Pain/Cramps at a muscle joint Sinus Infection Sore throat Causes: Lyme Disease (borrelia burgdorferi is a bacterium) This bacterium is a spirochete, and is related to relapsing fever and siphilis A spirochete has a long, thightly coiled structure Transmission: This disease is transmitted through tick bites. Carried by deer ticks, blacklegged ticks, castorbean ticks, and sheep ticks. Epidemiology: Lyme Disease first emerged in Europe (in the late 1800's) The first real outbreak was in Old Lyme, Connecticut (in the late 1970's) Humans do not affect the spread of the disease, it is really the deer that spread it to the ticks, which then spread it to the humans. Treatment/Cures/Prevention: 2-week to 1-month course of antibiotics such as Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, or Ceftriaxone If the patient is pregnant, it is only safe for the baby to use Amoxicillin Prevention: Hikers should wear long pnats, long sleeved shirts, or use insect repellent. |
