Chronology of the club

This website is full of facts and lacking much journalistic flair. What this
page needs is a nicely written history of the club (any volunteers?). However,
as a stopgap and a list of interesting facts that may help any future club
historian, here's a chronology of some of the interesting events (as yet,
mainly on the field) in the club's history:


1893

Original formation of Old Edwardians Cricket Club.

1948

Club re-formed with RJ Pringle-Brown as President and RE Kirby as club captain.

1949

SJ Sumner appointed club captain.

1952    

PO Kendrick appointed club captain. PO Kendrick scores 101* v Malvern (first
 century for 1st XI).

1954    

PO Kendrick scores 131* v Hagley (highest score to date).

1958    

BC Homer & PO Kendrick put on 163* for 3rd wicket v Harborne (highest
 partnership to date).

1959    

BC Homer scores 135 v Halesowen (highest score to date).

1961    

P Vernon & BC Homer score 165 for 2nd wicket v Solihull (highest partnership to
 date).

1964

RH Bayley appointed club captain.

1965

P Vernon appointed club captain.

1967

GE Phillips appointed club captain.

1968

P Vernon reappointed club captain.

1969

JD Rees & PD Babb score 182 for 2nd wicket v Evesham (highest partnership to
 date).

1972

AR Packham appointed club captain.

1975

P Vernon & JG Winspear score 194* for 2nd wicket v Northampton Saints (highest
 partnership to date).

1977

JG Winspear appointed club captain. PLC Knee's bowling average of 15.03 is best
 in a season to date.

1978

JG Winspear scores 137* v Rugby (highest score to date).

1979

N Barrington-Smith's bowling average of 14.48 is best in a season to date. FW 
Jones takes 41 catches and 2 stumpings (most in season to date). P Vernon
dismissed "obstructed field" v Harborne (only known instance for 1st XI).

1980

JG Winspear scores 170* v Redditch (highest score to date). FW Jones takes 45
catches and 6 stumpings (most in season to date).

1981

DB Taylor takes 9 for 14 v Bournville (best bowling figures ever). DB Taylor's 
bolwing average of 13.72 is the best in a season to date.

1982

RM Cox & RH Pope score 214 for 1st wicket v Leamington (highest partnership to 
date). PH Bennett's bowling average of 11.79 in the best in a season to date. 
PLC Knee takes 32 catches (then the most in a season by an outfielder).

1983

PH Bennett takes 9 for 59 v Evesham (the second best bowling ever for the 1st 
XI). FW Jones takes 56 catches and 2 stumpings (the most ever in a season).

1984

RH Pope appointed club captain. The 1st XI won the Worcester Border League, 
captained by RH Pope and FW Jones. RM Ball scores 1,685 runs (the most by an 
amateur in a season). ET Sirrell & RM Ball score 241* for the 1st wicket v 
Olton (then the highest partnership and still the highest for the 1st wicket - 
equalled in 2001).

1987

JD Nicholls takes 100 wickets (then the most in a season and still the most by 
an amateur).

1989

JG Winspear appointed club captain. PA Strang (Zimbabwe Test player) plays 1 
match for 1st XI. GC Martin (Zimbabwe 1-day player) plays 5 matches.

1990

MK Hughes appointed club captain. KGB Ziehl scores 200* v Moseley Ashfield 
(then the highest score). C Griffin scores 127 on debut v Leamington. ACI Lock 
(Zimbabwe Test player) plays 1 match.

1991

1st XI finish second in the Saturday League. AJ Moles scores 103* on debut v 
Blossomfield.

1993

JD Nicholls takes his 1,000th wicket for the 1st XI.

1994

JD Nicholls appointed club captain. JH Kallis (South Africa Test player) is 
club professional. 1st XI finish second in Saturday League. JH Kallis scores 
114* on debut v Sheldon Marlborough. RA Lucas & JH Kallis score 265* for the 
2nd wicket v Droitwich (still the highest partnership). CW Henderson (South 
Africa Test player) plays 1 match.

1995

MK Hughes scores 238 v Old Hill (still highest score). BC Baguley 
(professional) breaks many records, including: Most runs (2,441), Sunday League 
average (107.57), Most runs in Saturday League (1,019), Most 100s in a season 
(8). BC Baguley scores 102 on debut v Moseley. BC Baguley takes 37 catches (the 
most by an outfielder in a season).

1996

1st XI won the Saturday League. 1st XI win 25 matches (the most in a season to 
date). M Erasmus (professional) takes 119 wickets (still the most in a season). 
M Erasmus is only player ever to take 100 wickets and score 1000 runs in a 
season.

1997

MK Hughes scores 198* v Hampton-in-Arden (the best 1st XI score at the Memorial 
Ground). SB Hockly takes 8 for 50 v Lichfield (the best bowling away from home).

1998

NG Mason appointed club captain.

1999

1st XI relegated from the Birmingham League to the Warwickshire League. MK 
Hughes averages 75.95 (the best ever in a season).

2000

JD Nicholls appointed captain. JG Winspear plays in his 1,000th match for the 
1st XI.

2001

1st XI win the Warwickshire League. 1st XI wins 30 matches out of 43 (most ever 
in a season). 1st XI finish 3rd in the Sunday League (best ever). D Ridley 
(professional) averages 74.09 in the Saturday League (best ever average). D 
Ridley scores 108* on debut v Solihull Municipal. PJ Clarke & D Ridley score 
241 for 1st wicket v Netherton (equalling the best opening partnership). JD 
Nicholls takes his 1,500th wicket for the 1st XI. JD Nicholls' bowling average 
of 10.28 is the best ever in a season.
