This band from Turner Valley, Alberta combines all of the elements that have made artists from the eastern slopes of the Rockies so distinctive. Blending bluegrass, swing, country and folk into a sound that evokes the expansive beauty of the foothills, the Rounders are fast becoming a highly regarded part of the acoustic music scene in western Canada.
Friend and neighbour Ian Tyson has given their debut CD Four Rode By a ringing endorsement for the trueness of its acoustic sound and songs that float free on the prairie breeze. From the bluegrass of the Stanley Brothers to the old-time picking of Doc Watson and the Texas swing of Bob Wills, the Rounders play authentic roots music in a style thats true to its origins but with plenty of spirit and an open attitude. Their sets also include songs by contemporary writers and original tunes. The Sheep River Rounders are: Myran Szott (fiddle, mandolin and vocals) Myran has been the fiddler of choice for most country music artists in Alberta for more than 25 years. He was a member of Ian Tysons band the Chinook Arch Riders for nearly a decade and has appeared on numerous recordings, radio and television programmes and concert stages throughout Canada and the U.S. Myran is renowned as a master of the Texas swing fiddle style. John Cronin (dobro, guitar and vocals) Originally from the State of Maryland, John has made his home in western Canada since 1976. He is an accomplished guitarist with a longstanding love of the music of Merle Travis, Doc Watson and other traditional artists. Also a former Chinook Arch Rider, John played and recorded with Ian Tyson from 1987 to 1994. Richard Gullison (bass and vocals) Long a mainstay of the Calgary acoustic music scene on guitar and bass, Richard has played with Diamond Joe White, the Simpson Brothers and numerous other performers. A consummate sideman, Richard is also a capable lead vocalist and soloist. Steve Fisher (guitar and vocals) Steve is well known in the Calgary area for his work as a performer and presenter of bluegrass music. He also has strong interests in country blues, ragtime, and many other styles of music which feature the acoustic guitar. |
