Note 5: "What she is doing, quite clearly, is manipulating a familiar fiction: a madwoman herself, she plans to liberate herself and the girl Emmeline, who is meant to be her successor as Legree's mistress, by exploiting the story of the madwoman in the attic. It is, in other words, the enactment of a uniquely female plot that enables Casey to escape.
