Jacque & Linda -- Second cousins, once removed and FRIENDS forever

How To Count Cousins

Almost everyone has a set of relatives known as cousins. There are many other kinds of relatives, but cousins are the most often miscounted in our attempt to establish kin. Maybe this explanation will help.

First cousins are the children of brothers and sisters. The children of your aunts and uncles are your first cousins. This is easy enough to see. However, when these cousins have children we sometimes get fouled up.

The children of first cousins are second cousins to each other.

Third cousins are children of second cousins, etc.

Your first cousin once removed is the child of your first cousin. Some people believe that when their first cousin has a child it becomes their second cousin. This is not the case. It is your first cousin once removed. Your first cousin twice removed is the grandchild of your first cousin.

All of this is probably not clear, but neither is counting cousins!
