DAVENPORT, CARL MACK - A large crowd attended last rites Sunday afternoon for Carl M. Davenport, 49, well known Belfast logger who was killed in the woods near Lyman while working for the Skagit Mill Co. last Friday afternoon when he was truck by a falling snag. The accident was witnessed by James Davenport, a brother, who stood helpless nearby.

The service was held from the Burlington Free Methodist church with Rev. J. D. Warren of Seattle in charge. He was assisted by Rev. DeVoe and Rev Kerby of Burlington and Rev. DeLong of Sedro-Woolley. Music was furnished by Mrs. Herb Weber and Mrs. Bernice Burklich.

Interment was in Burlington cemetery, under the direction of the Walter Hulbush Funeral home with the following as pallbearers: Art Wineberger, Oliver Wiles, Curt Butler, Millard Rush, Howard Wardell and Eric Hoffman.

Carl Davenport was born at Sutherland, N.C., Dec. 9, 1884. After growing to manhood, he taught school there and came west to Skagit county in 1911. He has been a logger and farmer ever since. In 1915 he married [from this point on the photocopy of the obituary is too dark to read]

DAVENPORT, REV. CHARLES RAYMOND - The Reverend Charles Raymond Davenport, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed on to the spiritual realm Friday, October 5, 1990. Charles was known to many as theologian, philosopher, philanthropist, historian, teacher and counselor. He was also known as a logger, backyard mechanic and farmer. He cultivated minds and souls, as well as the earth itself.

Charles was born February 3, 1916 in Bow, Wash. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Davenport, Skagit County homesteaders. He was the sixth of eight children. Charles graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in 1934. He then worked in the woods with family members as a logger. Charles graduated from Seattle Pacific College in 1943 and went on to attain his Bachelors of Divinity at Garrett Theological Seminary. He was active in initiating Kiwanis Clubs in several communities. As pastor, he served the Free Methodist Church at Sheridan-Butler, and Amity, Oregon; Cambridge, Wisconsin; and in Washington at Anacortes, Grandview, St. Paul's, Tacoma, Stanwood, Manson and Little Rock. He retired from the ministry in 1980.

Charles leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Merle Davenport, of Tacoma; two sons and their wives Robert and Paul Davenport, Pleasanton, California (formerly of Puyallup), James and Pamela Davenport, Olympia; three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Philip Roell, Charlene Davenport, and Cynthia and John Wilson, all of Tacoma. Charles also leaves behind seven precious granddaughters Rebekah and Anna Davenport, Suman and Viju Jacob, Jaime Vache and Lara and Melissa Davenport. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law William and Evalyne Davenport, Stanwood; three sisters and their husbands, Ruby and Gay Houser, Blanchard, Lola and Frank Mahr, Poulsbo, Ethel and Roy Hendrickson, Maple Valley; and sisters-in-law Opal Davenport, Burlington and Lenabelle Wakeman, Spokane; and one aunt, Hettie Tyree of Sedro Woolley. Charles also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins, who affectionately knew him as "Chop." Charles was proceeded in death by his brother Lloyd Davenport, and sisters Mamie Johnson and Ruth Hatley.

Memorial services will be held at Puyallup Uited Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 9, at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at Hulbush Mortuary in Burlington, Washington at 2:30. Burial at Burlington Cemetery will follow. Arrangements by Hulbush Mortuary.

DAVENPORT, James Kesterson - James K. Davenport, 69, a resident of the Belfast community, died Friday afternoon at the Matthews General hospital in Burlington after an illness of several months.

Born June 24, 1884 in Solitude, North Carolina, he was married to Miss Bessie Lapham in Creston, North Carolina June 10, 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport moved to Belfast in 1912. He has been a member of the Burlington Free Methodist church.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Lloyd of Burlington, Bill of Stanwood and Charles Davenport of Cambridge, Wisconsin; four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hatley of East Stanwood, Mrs. Ruby Houser, Blanchard, Mrs. Lola Northcutt, Seattle, and Mrs. Ethyl Higgen, Mount Vernon; 18 grandchildten; one great grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Rose Banning of route 1, Burlington, a niece, Mrs. Don Hansen of Mount Vernon and three nephews, James and Tom Banning of Belfast and Ralph Davenport of Seattle.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Walter Hulbush Funeral home; burial will follow in the Burlington cemetery.

DAVENPORT, Lennie - Funeral services for Mrs. Lennie Davenport, who passed away in Seattle last Monday were held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Walter R. Hulbush funeral home in Burlington. Rev. B. T. Cross of the Free Methodist church officiated. A quartet composed of Mrs. Paul Cross, Ben Cross, Mrs. Helen Foskett, Kenneth Foskett sang "The Eastern Gate" and "Rock of Ages." They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Bernice Burklick. Pallbearers were, Roy Martin, Charlie Martin, Don Marsh, C. F. Cummings, Oliver Wiles and Thad Bingham. Burial took place in the Burlington cemetery.

DAVENPORT, MARY ELIZABETH (BESSIE) - Bessie Davenport, age 78, longtime resident of the Belfast area, passed away on Friday, Jan. 19 [1968], at United General Hospital.

She was born Dec. 8, 1889, in Creston, North Carolina, the daughter of Alex and Sally Latham. Her marriage to James Davenport took place June 12, 1904, in Creston. The family came here in 1912, and were instrumental in formation of the Skagit County Dairymen's Association.

Mrs. Davenport was a dedicated member of the Burlington Free Methodist Church and had been a primary church school teacher for a period of 30 years. In addition she had helped to raise more than 80 foster children over a period of years.

Mrs. Davenport was a former school board member both in the Belfast and Burlington Districts. Mr. Davenport passed away in 1953.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Houser, Blanchard, Mrs. Ethel Strickler, Bellingham, Mrs. Ruth Hatley and Mrs. Lola Northcutt, both of Seattle; three sons, Lloyd of Burlington, William of Stanwood, and The Rev. Charles Davenport of Tacoma. Also surviving are three sisters; three brothers; 20 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rose Banning of Mt. Vernon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Hulbush Funeral Home with The Reverends Roger Ensign and Evert Seymour officiating. Interment followed in the Burlington Cemetery.

The family suggested memorials to the Burlington Free Methodist Church.

DAVENPORT, MARY LAVINA - The death of Mary Davenport, aged 67, wife of T. J. Davenport at the family home at Belfast last Monday. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. Church. Internment was in the Macabee Cemetery, under the direction of Luther Jackson, undertaker.

DAVENPORT, LLOYD THOMAS - Lloyd T. Davenport, 70, resident of 1078 Jordan Road, Burlington, died Monday, February 16, 1976, at home. He was born May 4, 1905, in Sutherlin, North Carolina, and came to Skagit County in 1912.

His marriage to Opal Wiles took place December 27, 1927, in Burlington.

Mr. Davenport had been employed for many years by the Diary Herd Improvement Association. He retired as a security officer for Burns International Detective Agency in 1972.

He was a member of the Burlington Free Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Opal, at home; one daughter, Norma Duckart, Seattle; two grandsons David and Martin, Seattle; four sisters, Ruby Houser, Blanchard, Ruth Hatley, Seattle, Lola Northcutt, Seattle, and Ethel Heggen, Seattle; two brothers, William Davenport, Stanwood, and Rev. Charles Davenport, Chelan. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie Johnson.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) February 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Hulbush Chapel. Interment will follow in the Burlington Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Burlingon Free Methodist Church.

DAVENPORT, Opal Wiles - Opal Wiles Davenport, beloved Mom, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away at the age of 96 on August 28, 2004.

Opal was born in Ashe County, North Carolina to Oliver and Alice Wiles. At the age of one the family moved to Belfast, WA where she lived for 19 years.

She was a graduate of Burlington Edison High School. She worked in sales at the Mode O'Day Dress Shop both in Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley.

She was a member of the Lynnwood Free Methodist Church.

Opal married Lloyd Davenport in 1927, and they were married for 48 years.

She was a longtime resident of Skagit County until her health began to fail. In 1994 she moved to Lynnwood to live with her daughter.

Opal is survived by her daughter, Norma Duckart and her husband Norbert of Lynnwood; grandson, David Duckart and his wife Helga of Edmonds; five great-grandchildren: Nicolas and Tasia Duckart of Edmonds, Sean, Erica and Megan Duckart of Mukeltio; sister, Bernice Thomas Pipkin of Issaquah; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; parents, Oliver and Alice Wiles; brother, James Wiles; and grandson, Martin Duckart.

A graveside inurnment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2004 at Burlington Cemetery with Pastor Jim Johnson officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hulbush Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Burlington.

DAVENPORT, RALPH M. - Ralph M. Davenport, 75, of Everett, died Monday, June 28, 1999 at Providence Hospital in Everett.

Born June 27, 1924 in Burlington, he was a son of Carl M. and Lennie (Sluder) Davenport.

Raised in the Belfast area of Skagit Valley, he was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School.

Mr. Davenport served his country as a member of the U.S. Army, stationed in Morro Bay, California.

On February 24, 1951, he married Dorothy Mae Loomis in Sedro-Woolley. The couple made their home in Seattle where Ralph worked as a barber until his retirement in 1986.

In 1954, he graduated from the Northwest Bible Institute in Seattle.

Family and friends will remember Ralph as a people person whose hobbies included photography, reading and travel.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, at home; hs sister & brother-in-law, Willa & Don Hansen of Mount Vernon; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; two brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 2, 199 at Hulbush Funeral Home in Burlington. Interment will follow in the Burlington Cemetery.

DAVENPORT, William M. - William M. "Bill" Davenport, died on his 86th birthday, January 6, 2000.

He was born in 1914 in Burlington, WA, the son of James and Bessie (Latham) Davenport.

Bill grew up in Belfast-Skagit County where he attended school graduating from Burlington High School in 1931.

Bill joined the C.C.C. in 1934 where he worked in forestry, trails and bridges. In 1936 he married Evalyne Houser, and farmed in the Skagit Valley before moving to Stanwood in 1947.

Bill and Evalyne farmed for many years until a back injury forced a change of occupation.

Bill then worked for the Stanwood School District, driving bus for 13 years and then became head custodian at the Stanwood High School.

Bill loved his family and friends and especially young people. Bill worked on the fair board for 12 years. He signed a banknote along with 2 other members to finance the Blue Building.

He was a 4-H leader for 12 years and took great joy in the accomplishments of his 4-H family. For many years Bill and his family built and displayed the Stanwood Float. He traveled all over the Pacific Northwest making many friends throughout the state and Canada.

Bill will be sadly missed by his family and many friends and former students.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Lloyd, and two sisters, Mamie Johnson and Ruth Hatley.

He is survived by his beloved wife Evalyne, daughters: Sharron and her husband John Raider, Saundra and her husband Phillip Hall; four grandchildren: Tracy and her husband Calvin Bretz, Patrick and his wife Nikki Hall, Bill and his wife Stephanie Raider, Shannon and wife Dawn Raider, six great-grandchildren and three great-great granchildren. He is survived by sisters: Lola Mahr, Ruby and her husband Gay Houser & Ethel Heggen.

There will be a family graveside service at the Burlington Cemetery, Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at 10:00 AM to be followed by a memorial service at the Cedarhome Baptist Church, 29000 68th Ave. NW, Stanwood, 11:30 AM.

DAVENPORT, THOMAS JEFFERSON - Residents of the Belfast community were grieved the hear of the death of Thomas J. Davenport Sunday morning after an illness of less than a week.

Thomas Jefferson Davenport was born July 22, 1862 in Johnson county, Tennessee. When a small boy he moved with his parents to North Carolina where he spent his boyhood. His marriage to Mary Lavina Parsons occurred in 1880 and took place in Tennessee. To them were born three sons and one daughter, one sone died in infancy. In 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Davenport and family came to Belfast to make their home. In February 1921 Mrs. Davenport passed away. A son Carl Davenport met a tragic death in August 1934.

Mr. Davenport was a devoted member of the Free Methodist church.

He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Rose Banning and son James Davenport both residing in Belfast, two brothers, Jerry Davenport residing in Tennessee, and Asbury Davenport of Kentucky, a sister, Mrs. Myrtisia Price of Virginia, also 11 grandchildren and nine great granchildren.

Last rites were held from the Free Methodist church Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Oliver Haslam officiating, assisted by Rev. Galbraith and Rev. Dexter. A quartet consisting of Oliver Wiles, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wineberger and C. Cummings sang favorite hymns of the deceased.

Casketbearers were Lloyd Davenport, Archie Hatley, Gay Houser, Bill Davenport, Charles Davenport and Charles Johnson. Burial took place in Burlington cemetery under the direction of the Walter Hulbush funeral home.

DUCKART, Martin - Martin Duckart, 41, resident of Lynnwood, died Monday, November 16, 1998 at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds.

Born August 6, 1957 in Burlington, he was a son of Norbert and Norma (Davenport) Duckart.

As a small child, the family moved to the Seattle area where he was raised & educated. A 1974 graduate of Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, he also attended Shoreline Community College.

He was employed for many years as a printer with Walden Printing in Tukwila.

Martin loved sports and also enjoyed camping. His interests in addition to any outdoor activity included cooking.

Survivors include: one son and two daughters, Sean, Erica and Megan, all of Mukilteo; his parents, Norbert & Norma Duckart of Lynnwood; one brother & sister-inlaw, David & Helga Duckart of Edmonds; his grandmother, Opal Davenport of Burlington, who currently resides in Lynnwood; his grandfather, Norbert L. Duckart of Merced, CA; his aunt, Diane Houle, also of Merced; one cousin, Cathy Houle of Orland, CAl; his niece & nephew, Tasia & Nicolas Duckart of Edmonds.

Friends are invited to visitation from 9 to 11:30, Friday, November 20, 1998 at Hulbush Funeral Home in Burlington.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Novembe 20, 1998 at the Burlington Cemetery.

HOUSER, Jack H. - Jack Houser, age 73, life-long resident of Skagit Valley, died Friday, October 25, 2002 at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Born February 20, 1929 in Burlington, he was a son of the late Rex V. & Ethel Mae Houser.

Raised and educated locally, he was a 1947 graduate of Burlington-Edison High School.

For many years, he was employed with Darigold as a truck driver. He retired in 1991.

He was a member of the Teamsters, and a life-long member of the Allen-Blanchard United Methodist Church.

Among his hobbies and interests were hunting and cutting wood in Winthrop; spending time with his grandchildren especially attending their many sporting events; and visiting with his many friends at the Edison Cafe. He will be remembered by all as a lovable curmudgeon.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Scott Houser of Camano Island and Rex V. & Tami Houser of Blanchard; one daughter and son-in-law, Kim & Brian Morrison of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, Woody, Carly, Zoey, Sean, Brigitta, Tayler and Jeremy; four brothers; Gay Houser, Jim Houser, Rex Houser, Jr. and Ray Houser; four sisters; Olive Routon, Evalyne Davenport, Hazel Blankenship and Bettye Lou Houser; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Les Wilkinson; and his granddaughter, Amber.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at Allen-Blanchard United Methodist Church.

HOUSER, James R. - Our brother closed his eyes for the last time on a rainy Sunday morning, November 6, 2005 at the age of 86.

Jim was the 2nd son of Rex & Mae Houser Sr., born in the Bow area, where he received his education, graduating from Edison High School with the class of 1939.

In 1941 Jim met and married Faye Conn. They had one son, James Jr. In 1947 he married Anita Marrs from Anacortes. They had one son, Steve.

Jim spent 15 years working at Bornstein Houser Fish Market in Bellingham, later he was mainly a carpenter but "jack of all trades". Jim could fix most anything even when he was handicapped by a back injury.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge in Sedro-Woolley, long-time member of AARP Foundation & Edison High Alumni Association. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Rex & Mae Houser; stepmother, Betty Houser Sr.,; brothers, Gay and Jack; and stepbrother, Les Wilkinson.

He is survivied by his son, Steve Houser and wife Nikki of Port Orchard; grandson, Brian Houser of Seattle; 2 brothers, Ray Houser of Sedro-Woolley and Rex Houser of Burlington; 4 sisters; Olive Routon of Burlington, Evalyn Davenport of Stanwood, Hazel Blankenship of Missouri and Betty Lou Houser of Wintrhop; also many nieces and nephews.

No services are scheduled. Jim was cremated and his wish that his ashes be spread in the Okanogan area north of Wintrhop up Boulder Creek and around the Houser camp.

A big thank you to Life Care Center for their kindness and making Jim comfortable in his last days.

HOUSER, Ruby Alice - Ruby Alice Houser, 89, went to be with her Lord of Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at Mira Vista Care Center, Mount Vernon.

Born on August 13, 1912 in Bellville, Washington, she was the daughter of James and Bessie (Latham) Davenport.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1930.

On June 5, 1933, she was united in marriage to Gay Houser in Burlington. Ruby and Gay were dairy farmers in Blanchard for fifty years.

She was very active in her community as a member of Blanchard United Methodist Church, and a 4-H leader.

Her hobbies and interests included writing poems, and telling stories to children.

Survivors include her husband, Gay of Mount Vernon, two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Marva Houser of North Bend, Dennis and Bettye Houser of Bow; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Machael Gale of Monroe, Ethel and Andy Ploeg of Burlington; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces of nephews.

Preceding her in death were parents; three brothers; Charles, Lloyd, and William Davenport; and two sisters: Mamie Johnson and Ruth Hatley.

Visitation will be on Friday, December 28, 2001 from 9:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hulbush Funeral Home, Burlington.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at Bow Cemetery. A reception will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Allen-Blanchard United Methodist Church, 16775 Allen West Road, Bow.

NORTHCUTT/MAHR, LOLA B. - Lola B. Northcutt/Mahr joined Jesus in heaven February 10, 2003. Her son, Loran and grandson, Jim (who was her caretaker the last 8 years) were at her side when she died.

Lola was born on June 18, 1917 to James K. and Mary Elizabeth Davenport in Bow, Washington.

Lola married Oran H. "Barney" Northcutt in March 27, 1936. Barney died in June 21, 1972.

She later married Frank Mahr on January 11, 1979. He passed away on October 10, 1993.

Lola graduated from Burlington High School in 1936. She worked many years at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley. After moving to Seattle she continued her nursing career at Veterans Hospital where she received many commendations for her work.

Lola loved to travel. She and Frank traveled to Europe many times and Germany was always on the agenda. They later traveled to Mexico where they bought a condo in Vida Del mar at Manzanillo. This was her favorite place and they spent many winters there.

Lola was one of 8 children. Only her sister, Ethel, survives of the 8.

Lola is survived by two sons: Charles of Seattle and Loran of Kennewick; two daughters-in-law: Donna and Patricia; 4 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Lola also had many nieces and nephews that consider her their special Aunt "Lottie".

There will be a graveside ceremony at the Burlington Cemetery on February 14 at 11:00 A.M.

WILES, ALICEMrs. Alice Wiles, 80, resident of Skagit County since 1909, passed away July 27 in a Sedro-Woolley hospital following a short illness. She was born January 1, 1882, in Butler, Tennessee. Her marriage to Oliver Wiles took place January 26, 1899, in Creston, North Carolina. Mr. Wiles passed away in 1956. The family came to the Belfast community in 1909, and later moved to Burlington in 1941. Mrs. Wiles was a member of the Burlington Free Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Opal Davenport, Burlington, and Mrs. Bernice Thomas, Renton; one son, Rev. James Wiles, Redondo Beach, California; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. from the Hulbush Funeral Home with the Revs. Ezra Seymour and H. W. Ogden officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Myrtle Spurling accompanied by Mrs. Herbert Weber. Casketbearers were Norman Duckart, David Thomas, Keith Thomas, Robert Updike, Robert Wiles, and J. R. Williamson. Interment was in the Burlington Cemetery.
