HATLEY, Archie J. - Archie J. Hatley, 77, of Seattle, formerly a Skagit County resident died on Friday, July 23, 1982, in a Burien Hospital.

He was born Feb. 2, 1905, at Qu'Appelle, Northwest Territories, and came to Washington in 1917.

He married Ruth Davenport in Bellingham on June 10, 1930. Mrs. Hatley died on May 30, 1982.

Mr. Hatley had been employed for many years in the grocery business in Skagit County and retired from the Charles H. Lilly Company in 1967.

He was past president of the Mount Vernon Fraternal Order of Eagles. He had attended the Duwamish United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Rogers of Lynnwood and Delores Peddle of Kirkland; two sons, Ronald Hatley of Seattle and Donald Hatley of Federal Way; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Lyle Hatley of Seattle; two step-sisters, Evelyn Pittman of Seattle and Lillian Giles of Spokane; and an uncle, Lloyd Hatley of Sunnyside.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Grace Hatley.

Memorials may be made to Shorewood Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, Burien.

HATLEY, James - James Hatley Dies After Long Illness

Following two months' illness, James Hatley died early today at his home, 1511 Iron street, aged 76 years. He had lived here since 1917, and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Vercelia E. Hatley; two sons, Robert, of South Bay, and Lloyd Leroy, city; one daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Nichols, Ferndale; one sister, Mrs. Luthera Disbrow, Mankato, Minn., and three grandchildren. Homer Mark will make the funeral announcements.

HATLEY, Luthera - Sudden Death of Mrs. R. S. Hatley - The announcement of the death of Mrs. R. S. Hatley, a former resident of this village, which occurred at the home of her son, David Hatley in Northfield last Monday night was a shock to her many former neighbors and friends. Altho Mrs. Hatley had been in poor health for some time, her death was unlooked for and unexpected. Heart failure and a complication of trouble arising from old age were the causes of her sudden demise. Mrs. Hatley had failed rapidly after her husband's death last summer. The remains were brought to Havana. The funeral was held from the Presbytrian church on Thursday, December 14th. The interment was made in the Havana cemetery. On account of Mrs. Hatley's life and death appear in another column in this issue of The People's Press.

HATLEY, Luthera - Mrs. Luthera Hatley died at the home of her son, David Hatley in Northfield, last Monday evening at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Hatley had been in poor health for several years. She was sick but a short time. A complication of troubles and general breaking down due to old age was the cause of her death. The remains were brought to Owatonna and taken to the home of her daughter on Tuesday. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church in Havana Thursday afternoon. The interment was made in the Havana cemetery.

Mrs. Hatley's maiden name was Miss Luthera Soper. She was born in New York state some seventy-three years ago. She spent her girlhood days, attained womanhood, and in June, 1851, was married to the late R. S. Hatley. Mr. and Mrs. Hatley first made their home of Lisbon. In 1867, they came west and settled in Owatonna township. They made their home in Owatonna township until 1877 when they moved to Havana township. Mr. Hatley died on Wednesday July 12th. In the fall Mrs. Hatley decided to make a visit with her different children and to spend the winter with her son, James Hatley and family in Milbank, South Dakota. Since her husband's death, Mrs. Hatley failed in health very rapidly.

Mrs. Hatley was a Christian woman, a kind wife, a good mother and a most excellent neighbor. She was held in high esteem by all her acquaintances.

The decedent is survived by four grown up children as follows: James Hatley, Milbank, South Dakota; David Hatley, Northfield, Minnesota; John Hatley, Havana, Minn., and Mrs. L. A. Disbrow of this city.

HATLEY, Luthera - Mrs. R. S. Hatley a former old resident of Havana township, died at her home in Northfield Tuesday morning, of the infirmities consequent upon old age. The remains were brought to this city Wednesday and the funeral was held at Havana yesterday afternoon. The deceased was a highly respected lady and is mourned by many friends. She is survived by four children, Mrs. L. A. Disbrow of this city, David Hatley of Northfield, John Hatley of Havana and James Hatley of Milbank, South Dakota.

Lyle Alvin Hatley, 86, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday, August 5, 2001 at a local care center.

He was born November 29, 1914 in Alberta, Canada the son of Robert and Edith Decur Hatley. As a young child his family moved to Whatcom County where he was raised and educated.

Lyle served in the US Army Air Force from January 1943 until February 1946. The US Army presented him with his US citizenship, with 2 other servicemen, in front of the Taj Mahal while serving in India and also in Africa. He received the American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

For over 20 years he was a machinist at various fish canneries in South Eastern Alaska. He was the first one to open the cannery up in the spring and the last to leave in the fall when closing the cannery. He worked for the Gresham School District retiring in 1980 when moving to Skagit County. One of Lyle's favorite past times was following the Mariners.

Memorials are suggested to Boys and Girls Clubs of Skagit Valley, 642 Cascade Mall Drive, Burlington, WA 98233.

He is survived by 2 nephews: Donald and Christine Hatley of Federal Way and Ronald Hatley of Seattle; 2 nieces: Betty and Richard Ray of Camano Island, WA and Delores and Al Peddle of Duvall, WA; a cousin, Gloria Hatley of Yakima, WA; numerous great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy and a brother and sister-in-law, Archie and Ruth Hatley and an uncle Lloyd L. Hatley.

A service at the graveside will be Friday, August 10, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. at Hawthorne Memorial Park. Visitation will be at Hawthorne Funeral Home, Thursday, August 9, 2001 from noon until 5:00 P.M. and Friday morning from 9:00 A.M. until noon. VFW Chaplain Will Shively will be officiating with full military honors from the VFW.

Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Hawthorne Funeral Home.

HATLEY, Ruth F. - Ruth (Davenport) Hatley, 73, of Seattle, a former Skagit County resident, died Sunday, May 30, 1982 at Shorewood Hospital, Burien, following an extended illness.

She was born Aug. 5, 1909 in Solitude, N. C., a daughter of James and Bessie Davenport. She came with her parents to Washington at the age of two years.

She was a 1927 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Bellingham Normal School.

Her marriage to Archie J. Hatley took place June 10, 1930 in Bellingham.

She taught elementary school at Belfast and in Anacortes.

She had resided in various Skagit county communities including the English Logging Camp east of Conway. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church and had attended the Duwamish United Presbyterian Church. She was a past president of the Mount Vernon Eagles Auxilary.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Rogers of Lynnwood and Delores Peddle of Kirkland; two sons, Ronald of Seattle and Donald of Federal Way; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby House of Blanchard, Lola Mahyr of Poulsbo and Ethel Heggen of Seattle; two brothers, William Davenport of Stanwood and the Rev. Charles Davenport of Tacoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mamie Johnson and one brother, Lloyd Davenport.

HATLEY, Robert Edwin - Robert Hatley Summoned Monday

A retired farmer, Robert E. Hatley, 69, of 1326 Grant Street, passed away Monday in a local hospital. He had lived in this community twenty-two years.

His wife, Edith, at the home, survives; also two sons, Archie J. and Lyle A., of Mount Vermon; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Evelyn Pittman, of Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Mary A. Nichols, of Bellingham, and a brother, Lloyd L. Hatley, of Anacortes; seven grandchildren; and a niece, Mrs. Florence A. N. Jones, of this city.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Harlow-Hollingsworth funeral home where the remains are resting.

HATLEY, Robert Sample - R. S. Hatley, one of the pioneer settlers of Havana, passed away at his home in this village last Saturday evening. Death was the result of a complication of troubles arising from old age. he had been in poor health for a couple of years. Only on Wednesday of last week he was compelled to take to his bed and from that time on was confined to his bed. The funeral services, which were very largely attended, held from the Presbyterian church in this village on Monday afternoon. The interment was made in the Havana cemetery. The decedent was one of the prominent and influential men of Havana and was respected and esteemed by all his acquaintances. He was a tireless worker, thrifty and economical. He is survived by a sorrowing wife and several grown up children. An extended obituary of R. S. Hadley [sic] is published elsewhere in this issue of The People's Press.

HATLEY, Robert Sample - Robert S. Hatley, one of the sturdy pioneers of Steele county, was taken very sick on Wednesday, July 12, and died last Saturday at his home in Havana village, aged 81 years, 3 months and 15 days.

Although Robert S. Hatley had not been in the best of health for the past two years, death came to him Saturday as sudden as it was unexpected. He had suffered from rheumatism and at times complained of a shortness of breath. Yet withall he was up and around up to Wednesday, July 12.

The funeral services were held last Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian church, havana village, the pastor, Rev. John Ferry, of Claremont, officiating. The interment was made in the Havana cemetery. The services were largely attended. Robert S. Hatley was born in Lisbon, New York state, March 30, 1824. He spent his boyhood days, attained manhood, and in June 1851, married Miss Luthera Soper at Lisbon, New York state. Mr. and Mrs. Hatley first made their home at Lisbon. In 1867 they came west and settled in Owatonna township. They made their home in Owatonna township until 1877, when they moved to Havana township. Here they have ever since made their home.

R. S. Hatley was a man in every sense of the word. When he gave a promise, he kept it. He met all of his obligations and was temperate and moderate in all of his habits. He was an industrious and thrifty man, a kind husband, a good father, a most excellent neighbor and always a friend to a man in need. He was considerate of others and was respected and exteemed by the entire community.

The decendent leaves as aged wife and four grown up children as follows: James Hatley, Milbank, South Dakota; David Hatley, Northfield, Minnesota; John Hatley, Havana, and Mrs. L. A. Disbrow, of this city.

HATLEY, Robert S. - Robert S. Hatley, a pioneer resident of Steele county, died at his home in Havana township last Saturday at the age of eighty-one years, three months, and fifteen days.

The deceased was born in Lisbon, New York on March 30, 1824. He was married to Luthera Soper in June of 1851. In 1867 they came west and settled in Owatonna township in this county where they lived ten years, when they removed to Havana township which has been their home for twenty-nine years.

Mr. Hatley was a man of strong and upright character who enjoyed the high respect of all his neighbors. He is survived by his wife and four children, James Hatley of Milbank, South Dakota; David Hatley of Northfield; John Hatley of Havana township in this county, and Mrs. L. A. Disbrow of this city.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Havana. Rev. Mr. Ferry of Claremont officiating, and interment was made in the Havana cemetery.

HATLEY, Vercelia - Mrs. Vercelia Hatley, Churchwoman, Called

Mrs. Vercelia Emogene Hatley, who had lived in Bellingham fourteen years, died early today at her home, 1511 Iron street, aged 77 years, after six month's illness. She was a member of the First Baptist church at Owatonna, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at the Homer Mark mortuary at 2 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. W. E. Loucks officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn cemetery.

Mrs. Hatley is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. E. Nichols, city; two sons, Robert Edwin Hatley, Sedro-Woolley, and Lloyd L. Hatley, Clallam Bay; two brothers, Jaley Medley and Delzeron Medley, Milbank, S.D.; one sister, Mrs. John Hatley, Owatonna, Minn., and five grandchildren.
