John D. Rockefeller established the Standard Oil Company of Ohio in 1870. "Enforcing strict economy, by mergers and agreements and by ruthlessly crushing his opponents, Rockefeller soon dominated the American oil refining industry." In 1882, the various members of the Rockefeller congomeration formed the Standard Oil Trust, and in 1911 the Supreme Court ordered the corporations directors of the susidiaries of the trust to release their control.
