• Use pest free plants
• Cultivate for several weeks before planting time to get rid of weeds that might be hosting "pests"
• Use companion planting techniques, for example: plant nasturtiums with melons to deter cucumber beetles.
• Ring your garden with a dense border of marigolds as a barrier against aphids

• Don't plant beans near beets, cabbage, onions or sunflowers
• Don't plant cucumbers near potatoes
• Don't plant potatoes near tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, raspberries or sunflowers.
• Don't plant strawberries near kohlrabi.
