December 13, 2004 A little more than a week ago, when I tried to switch AOL from dial-up to broadband, AOL dropped a bomb on my Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers. They have not worked properly since. There is an excellent work-around, however--Mozilla Firefox--which is free, can be downloaded, and can be installed and running in less than 10 minutes. I am testing it now and if it works as early experience indicates, I will put a link to their site here on our site.
December 19, 2004 Our Home Page is now decorated for the holidays and our holiday note his here.
January 8, 2005 On December 30, 2004, the Waterbury Republican-American ran a nice article about Peirce, with two pictures, Since then Peirce has been trying to get permission to reproduce the article on this site. They are willing to allow it, but at a cost. They want to charge for this totally non-commercial use. If this was the general practice in the newspaper business we might not find it so objectionable. However, most papers post their articles on their own web sites and allow us to link to them without charge. The Waterbury paper leaves the articles up for only three days, then wants money if you want to see it again. We believe this practice is not ethical and not in keeping with the general practice of the newspapers with which we are familiar. In an effort to obtain permission to use the article without charge, Peirce has contacted the publisher, W. J Pape. So far, in nearly a week, Mr. Pape has not responded.
January 24, 2005 This past weekend was what, in this area, will be referred to as the "Big Storm of '05." But, to term it "unbelievable," as the so-called reporters on one Connecticut television station did, is a gross overstatement. After all, this is the NORTHeast, and in the middle of the winter. The storm dumped about 15 inches of snow on Southbury. Since the temperature stayed in the teens, or below, the snow drifted easily in the high wind, making a precise measurement difficult. However, by mid-morning on Sunday the storm had moved out of Western Connecticut and the roads were clear enough for cautious travel.
