GOD MADE A RISK IN CREATING HUMAN BEINGS
(my personal reflection on the film "God in the Dock")
note: This short but meaningful film is about God who was tried in court for all the evil that happens in the world. The five accusers pointed at God's apparent lack of care and concern for those people who suffered so much. And yet these people who suffered are relatively just and God-fearing.
For me, ‘God in the Dock’ is a story of people from different walks of life who have one common problem in the situation of evil in the world. Evil for them exists in the form of hungry people in the third world countries, failure of relationships in families and friends, the incapability to solve problems for just one person, and so on. It seems that sufferings in the world are insurmountable. Moreover, these human sufferings happen because God does not care for them and does not provide them answers to the problems of the world.
The setting of the story is the courtroom, where God is accused and tried for all those evil things that happen to humanity. The accusers are people from different sectors of society who experienced some ill feelings of life as they try to fulfill their ordinary duties according to the way in which they are in.
As I view the film in the beginning, I feel somewhat amused at seeing God, in the human form, being tried in the court, as if he had done something wrong to people he had given many gracious gifts for life.
The accusers blame God for the unequal distribution on goods in the world. For them, he is responsible for the death of many people because of starvation. Similar to this, an accuser blames God for the loss of his loved one, for the failure of family relationships, for the misery that creeps within many individuals. And the common question they raised is: "Why did God allow these evil things to happen?" or "Why did he create us all if only in the end we suffer?" Against the background of their sad experiences, God for them is a cruel, uncaring and useless God.
Towards the end of the film, the prosecutor demanded answers from God himself for all these questions the accusers raised. But even if how much God had answered them, they did not still understand all of these. God spoke about something, but the prosecutor said another thing.
I think, the topics which were brought out by all of the witnesses, about the evil that exists in the world, are very relevant. They are the same questions I watch from movies, read from newspapers, heard from conversations of some people, and even sometimes from my personal evaluation of my community. It seems to me that the question on the presence of evil in human life is a universal concern. Why? It is because, I presuppose that this reality is not alien to the whole of humanity. This problem of evil in all forms of sufferings and lack of goodness in creatures is really an established fact of human life, even to people who had all the comforts in life.
As I have evaluated on the content of the short film, I found out something which is common in all the accusers of God. They accused God for the evil they experienced themselves. One accused Him for the imbalance of material goods between the third world and the first world countries. Another accused Him for the loss of his loved one. Still, one blamed Him for what happened in their family.
Together with this observation, I somewhat see a pattern in the way the defense found its way out. The defense attorney tries to make the accusers realize that the evil they encountered in life does not come from God directly, much more if He is accused of being the cause of it. God, however, allows it inasmuch as man is endowed with the gift of freedom. There is evil in the world because man abused his freedom. Likewise, He respects that freedom of man.
If they just have to analyze their situations, these people would realize that sufferings are caused by man himself, not God. And if they would need to blame someone, they should be blaming themselves for such tremendous destruction they wrought in the world.
Thereupon, on the question of placing freedom on man, God decided to take that risk for He willed creating man not robots. In freedom, man enjoys love. God willed man to Himself. And so when man complained to God on what had happened to him, man must realize that life is not just a bunch of dirty garbage. "Life is meant to be enjoyed."
We receive many good things from the Lord. Yet, most of the time, we forgot to thank Him for those blessings. But if we encounter the reality of evil in life, we did not fail to forget in blaming Him for that. But come to think of it, did God, the all Good Father, cause evil for His children? God is even very good that he respects our nature. He did not forget that He gives us freedom - a freedom which is meant to enjoy life.
In this issue of human suffering, I do not judge anybody for blaming God. It is natural for us to do, a weak creature. But what I wish or pray to God is that man may realize that even in suffering, God is there - that if it happens that they were able to overcome or transcend this evil, he may be reminded that it is God who supports him to do so. For alone he can do nothing.
