| Week 3 | ||||
| The third week of the season was a good one for the Backspinners as they notched their first win over a tough Apple Dumpling squad. The game was moved from the friendly confines of "Your Name Here" field to the soggy outfield turf. Days of rain leading up to the game did not deter the league from canceling games (not like my wimpy softball league which has't played a game since before the new Matrix movie came out... and I only mention this because apparently some folks went to go see that movie after kickball the first week instead of drinking... a decision which ranks up there with switching Becky's on Roseanne in the stupidity department, you know it wasn't that great a flick). The pregame festivities (aka get blitzed before we make asses out of ourselves) featured an amazing cooler full of margaritas provided by Matt Booker. The game started with BGB putting three runs on the board quickly to take an early lead. The left fielder from Apple Dumpling Gang (while full of smack talk) seemed afraid of a little mud and when the ball was kicked into the baseball infield in left, he chose not to pursue it too hard resulting in a couple of home runs. As the game progressed great plays were made in the field by both teams but since I don't know the names of any of the Apple Dumpling crew besides their fearless leader Joe Cassidy, I can only retell one of the best plays (okay this is my ego talking). In the second inning one of the Dumplings kicked a ball to the left of John "Stub Daddy" McGuire on the mound. With cat like reflexes (He's got a new nickname ripped off from the Sopranos, "Big P#ssy", but that may be due to his lack of drinking ability) he lunged to his left (thankfully, because he can't go right, it's okay, you can laugh) and flicked the ball over to Wes Arnold just a step ahead of the kicker for the out. A definite sportscenter highlight except that we haven't yet been given our due pub from ESPN (give it time, I hear we might be an exhibition event at the Athens '04 Olympics along with dodgeball). In the top of the third inning, The Apple Dumpling Gang came storming back, scoring three runs as they tried to exploit the BGB right field dancing queen Sarah Shellhouse. In the bottom of the third, Apple Dumpling Gang did manage to execute an amazing triple play stunning BGB. With the game suddenly very close the two headed centerfield monster of ABJ and Matt Booker stepped up the next inning to make the final outs and preserve the first win of the season. Margaritas were had by all. I don't know what was in them, but I hope it's a regular thing. Guest referees this week included Carrot Top and Alf whom Wendy Mock and Ashley Peterson promptly tried to light on fire after the game to end years of horrible exposure to the public. However due to the wet weather, they had to settle for Jonathan Aaltonen running the punk phone pitchmen over using Herbie the Love Bug (I always knew that car was pure evil!). Quote of the Game: "Kickball is like my high and L-Dogg is like my munchies" (the crap I make up isn't this funny) -Larry Liff A few post game notes. First, don't ever try and walk into the outfield bushes to relieve yourself or you will find as Laura "L-Dogg" Smith did, when we have 30 days of rain, it's a slippery slope and you will fall on your butt. Also, has anyone seen Neil Lowentritt as happy as he was Wednesday after he realized the Superfriends forfeited a win to his team. He was frolicking like a little girl. Am I the only one that thinks Stacey should be the next nominee for saint-hood? On another note, I was able to stay and referee the instant classic between Gluckzilla and TFKA. One comment, Dennis was wearing tackified gloves, that's one step away from showing up in flip up shades and using eye black. It's kickball for pete's sake, use your bare hands like the rest of us you sissy, you won't break a nail. Also can we get more than three people writing recaps every week, aren't you sick of getting just George's mushroom enhanced weirdness, Bocquets bitterness and my crappy writings, step up! We've proven (again and again) that it doesn't have to be good or even factual. Soon we'll be forced to hire trained monkeys to write the missing game recaps and their idea of fun is flinging feces at one another and the public (okay, Chris, George and I do that too... oops). Final Score: Baby Got Backspin 5, The Apple Dumpling Gang 3. |
