SPEECH
SCOPE AND SEQUENCE


Enhancement of positive self-image, self-esteem, and self-confidence.  The student shall be afforded opportunities to:

    1.  develop an awareness of each person's uniqueness;
    2.  recognize that appropriated speaking skills are valuable assets now and in
         the future; and
    3.  reach for self-actualization.

Interpersonal and group communication.  The student shall be afforded oppor-
tunities to:

    1.  participate in a variety of kinds of formal and informal group
         discussions;
    2.  learn to express one's own feelings appropriately.

The basic communication process.  The student shall be afforded opportu-
nities to:

    1.  recognize the elements of the communication process;
    2.  recognize good and bad listening habits;
    3.  exhibit critical listening skills;
    4.  formulate ideas;
    5.  express ideas effectively;
    6.  recognize the rights of others to have differing viewpoints;
    7.  recognize and use nonverbal language;
    8.  examine the basic vocal process.

Types of speeches.  The student shall be afforded opportunities to:

    1.  evaluated speeches given by others;
    2.  explore the use of the voice and body in speaking situations;
    3.  examine the different purposes for speaking;
    4.  establish criteria for evaluation.

Interpretive reading.  The student shall be afforded opportunities to:

    1.  choose appropriate material for oral reading;
    2.  analyze literary selections;
    3.  perform selections as an individual or with a group; and
    4.  establish criteria for evaluation.
