Expectations
in Speech and Drama
This is a performance class.
Your participation and cooperation are vital to your success.

Students will follow the Student Handbook.

Students will enter class quietly and follow instructions on overhead.

Place absentee slips in designated location.
-
Hall passes will be issued and kept in student folder. Use them wisely.
No more will be issued for the term. You will have plenty of time between
classes to use the restroom before entering class. Bonus points will be
rewarded to those with unused passes at the end of the term.

It is important for you to arrive on time to class. Three (3) tardies
equal a detention.

There will be no gum/candy/food/open drinks in class.

There will be no talking while the teacher is talking or while another
person "has the floor." Remember to raise your hand if you wish to speak.

Fighting, abusive language or disrespect toward anyone will not be tolerated.
Zero tolerance for disruptive behavior

Absolute silence must be maintained during any emergency.
-
Students will practice audience etiquette during all performances. See
Audience Etiquette Guidelines.

Come prepared to class everyday with required materials.
-
The teacher’s whistle or the words "Time" and "Audience" are cues for
absolute silence.
-
No running/horseplay in the theatre.
-
Never pull on or twist the curtains or go behind the back curtains.
You must stay visible to the teacher at all times.

Always use the steps when going on stage. Please don’t jump on/off from
the apron of the stage.

Feet should never be propped on the chairs in front of you.
-
Desks must remain down unless you need them to do written work.
-
No one is allowed in the tech. booth until you’ve been properly trained
to use the equipment.
Audience Etiquette
All will be expected to follow Audience
Etiquette. Your failure to abide by these guidelines will result in your
receiving a zero (0) on your performance. If you receive a zero for not
following AE, you will have one chance to make up that grade at the teacher’s
convenience. However, the highest grade you will be allowed to earn for
a perfect performance is the score of 80 percent
.

Pay attention to all performances; watch
and listen.

Stay quiet; absolutely no talking.

Never make fun of another person’s performance.
-
Refrain from shouting comments to or intentionally
distracting the actor during his presentation.
-
Avoid practicing your scene during other
performances.
-
Applaud every presentation.
-
Never get out of your seat, move around
the room, or distract the teacher during a performance.
-
The teacher-director is the one to offer
suggestions or critiques after final performances. During the rehearsal
process you will often provide peer evaluations to enhance the final presentation.
Please refrain from making negative remarks to your classmates after
they have completed a final performance.
