A small collection of marine antiques
Because
I like sailing and also because I like antiques, I have started to collect
different objects, first there are the maps, not necessarily nautical charts
but maps about the coast and islands we have visited. Prints from 1750
until 1830 preferably. One example is the Caribbean map from Ing. Bellini,
1754.
Then the last acquisition which is a compass
from a Glasgow company, gimballed mounted in its wooden box. I would say
from the beginning of this century, although I do not know for sure. The
compass was bought here in Brazil!
When I visited Argentina, I came across
this shop by the antique centre in Buenos Aires, that deals in nautical
instruments and other marine collectibles.
There I got an anchor lamp, 360° white
light. Maybe one day it will shine marking JP's boat!
Maybe the sextant will see some use one day,
although GPS is the in thing now. Or the spyglass... (pictures next time!)
The little bottle was used to refill the
kerosene lamps on a sailing ship.
