back to poetry
Who do you say I am?

Some men called me Elijah,
others a great prophet from long ago,
The Pharisees called me a blasphemer.
Herod wanted me to put on a show,
Pilate saw me as an innocent pawn,
Caiaphas said I had it all wrong.
Each of these men had their thoughts,
but today it was your heart I sought.
Who do you say I am?

Peter confessed me the Son of God
he called me the Christ of endless worth.
John called me his Beloved,
Word made flesh, dwelling on Earth.
A Bridegroom I was to virgins pure
Bernard called me Love that will always endure.
All the saints confessed their creed.
Your act of faith is what I need.
Who do you say I am?

Arius said I was just a man,
not the same substance as My Father,
Nestorius said I was two people,
one was Divine, but not the other,
Some others  say I was just a teacher
equal to any other worthy preacher.
A lot of men have spoken of me.
I want to know if you agree.
Who do you say I am?

John the Baptist called me a Lamb,
to be offered in sacrifice.
David says Im like an eagle,
upon whose wings youll rise to the heights.
Aquinas says I am a pelican,
I pierced my bosom for all men.
Yes these men had a poetic gift,
What animal would you compare me with?
Which would you say I am?

Now some call me a political hero,
who is not needed for you to be saved,
They say my miracles were all symbolic
Im not quite as good as the saints once raved.
The resurrection was just an allegory
I did not die for you, but for my beliefs.
The wise men think they know a lot
Do you believe all they have taught?
Who do you say I am?

Will you confess my Divinity,
or run away and deny me?
Will you call me your Lord and King?
and from your heart My praises sing?
Will you stand and proclaim My name,
despite the fact it brings you shame?
I dont care what the others say.
Im knocking on the door of YOUR heart today.
Who do YOU say I am?

This poem was written for my youth group.  It is about confessing our faith in Christ, when so many have denied Him.
