| This is a letter written to a Catholic newspaper that was constantly attacking and critising the hierarchy the church. It is in defense of obedience and although short, I think it was effective. |

Dear Editor, I have recently read a few issues of your paper. I see that many of the letters sent in and some of the articles question the authority of the Church's hierarchy. I think that it is important to remember that Jesus founded the hierarchy for our sake and that he is present within the church. He said to Peter "upon this rock I will build my church" (Mt 16:18) The church belongs to Jesus. It is only by the Holy Spirit that the magisterium is given it's authority. Truth is not a matter of personal opinion. This is teaching is repeated in both Vatican II(Lumen Gentium 18-29) and the new Catechism.(par. 874-896) We must remember the words of St. Paul: "God placed the parts, each one of them in the body as he intended" (1 Co 12:18) Whether hierarchy or laity we all have different roles according to God's plan. The role of the heirarchy is to teach, our role is to act. If we have a disagreement with church teaching we should seek understanding rather than dissent or disobedience. Obedience is not a burden, but a virtue that helps us follow Christ the head of the Church! Jason Kuntz Hanover On. |
