IR uses a unique internal “signature” to identify the type of remote that was downloaded. It then uses this “signature” to select a remote-specific RDF file, which identifies the remote and defines how that remote is configured.
In some cases, UEI will “repackage” a single remote to multiple third parties. This is particularly true of remotes for cable companies. In these cases, it is possible that even though the look of the physical remote may be different or buttons are labeled differently, internally they are the same remote.
If IR misidentifies your remote, this generally is OK. It means that internally your remote is the same as the remote is selected. There may be slight differences in the physical buttons between your remote and the identified remote. You can either live with these differences, or you can edit the [Buttons] section of the RDF file being used to change the names to those on your remote. For more details on the RDF file, read the RDFxSpec.doc document that was packaged with the IR program.
In the off chance that IR is misidentifying your remote and it is causing major problems, you should save the file downloaded to IR, upload it to the Diagnostics section of the JP1 Users Group, and post a message to the Messages section giving details of the problem you are having.
