On the
Web
The Furious spinner
This is the blog of the novelist Kim Antieau whose published
novels feature a blend of fable, myth in futuristic and/or dreamlike
settings. They feature strong, independent female protagonists
and are permeated with themes of self-actualization, speaking truth
to power, spiritual quests and reverence for the environment. Her
blog carries the same themes as they are obviously woven into the fiber of
her life. She shares generously of the details of her personal
struggles with her craft, her health, her spiritual path and her
political activism.
Orcinus The
blog of independent journalist David Neiwert who specializes in monitoring
and writing about hate crime and the various ideologies, groups and
movements that espouse violence and hate. He won the Koufax award
for best blog series in both 2003 and 2004. His blog occassionaly
mentions aspects of the writing life and the craft, including book signing
tours, but mostly it is where he informaly explores the themes he workes
into formal articles and books. He is a monumentally prolific
blogger. But then he is monumentaly well informed on his
subject.
The Modern Word A site dedicated to the promotion and the
analysis of the literary genre of Magic Realism. A real work of
love. Offers a free newsletter. Holds word play
contests. Publishes essays on related topics from many well
know writers. Interesting from a writer's perspective for the bios
of the authors: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Borges, Franz Kafka,
Thomas Pynchon, among others. Also features meticulous and
comprehensive annotated bibligoraphies of all works by and sometimes
about the featured writer. Warning: it is easy to lose yourself in
the labrynth for hours and hours.
National Novel Writing Month
A
yearly writing 'contest' held every November in which the only losers
are the ones who don't play and the only prizes are the pride of
accomplishment and the community support from the other contestents who
are racing for the same goal as you--a 50,000 word novel inside of 30
days
