***************INSPIRATIONS and FOOD FOR THE MIND and SOUL******************
HELLO from my bright State of South Carolina world!
I'm JoyMac.
This page is being brought to you from GREENWOOD, SC, a small city nestled somewhere in between Greenville and the State Capitol of Columbia! Here you'll find a varity of subjects from Southern History and some genealogy to links which will take you to some very interesting and beautiful sites to inspirations for the mind and soul!
There's a lot of history tucked in each little corner of this neat county, as well as neighboring counties! Come visit my page often to see the different little tidbits of interesting information of days long past....some about Greenwood...some about other towns and cities within South Carolina. One source of a lot of these bits of information is from our local newspaper's "Localisms" mini-articles.
Greenwood's first railroad, the Greenville & Columbia Railroad
branch, from Columbia to five miles north of Greenwood, was completed on July 14, 1852. Originally, these tracks went
through the center of Greenwood's Main Street which
became the 'widest main street in the world'.
Did you know Bonham and Travis of Alamo fame were from Saluda, SC? Saluda is a small town about 30 miles southeast of Greenwood. There are two streets named for Bonham & Travis.
One of the earliest settlements in SC (mid 1700s) was about
8 mi west of Saluda, SC in Edgefield Dist. Some of the names
of people who settled there were Faulkner, Timmerman, McManus, Dorn, Ouzts Utz), Horn, Holloway, Nicholson, Lewis, Barlett, and Stephens. These are the names most members of the Timmerman2 List are researching.
Names I am researching are Cannon, Gray, Bagwell, Mote(s), Ferguson, Lister, Barrett, Barton, Moore, Reid, Easley, Grogan, and Gowen. I also researching McManus, Ouzts, Timmerman, Faulkner, Horn(e), DeVore, Holloway, Holley, Lewis, Hasting(s), Stroud, Harling, Polattie, Goldman, and others which are included on the Timmerman2 list below. If you are descended from any of these names in SC, please contact me. I have lots of McManus, Ouzts, DeVore, Hastings, Easley and Timmerman information. Most of these settled in Edgefield Dist./Co., Old Ninety Six District. The other names are mostly from Laurens, Abbeville, Princeton, Greenwood, Greenville, and Spartanburg. I hope to have a page linked to this site soon on all my researched names!
I have a Timmerman list and website at Yahoo! which covers part of the names mentioned above and more who settled in the Old Edgefield Dist and Old Ninety Six Dist. Names not on the site are my research names above - Cannon Gray, Bagwell, Mote(s), Ferguson, Lister, Barrett, Barton, Moore Reid, Easley, Grogan and Gowen. Information is available on names beginning with McManus. If you are interested in joining or finding out more about this list and site, please click on the button below!

Among Edgefield's historical treasures, its Courthouse Square is home to the Old Edgefield District Archives, a haven for genealogists and area historians. Nearby, Pottersville Museum marks the site of a 19th Century village supported by the manufacture of stoneware...which brings a pretty price tag at auctions held in this area today.
One of the region's most popular historic homes is the 1840s-era Burt-Stark house, in ABBEVILLE, SC, two blocks north of the town square. Confederate President Jefferson Davis stayed there, with pursuing Federal troops close behind, near the close of the Civl War.
Star Fort Historical Park of Rev. War fame holds their annual Candle Light Tours on a Saturday night in October each year. A tour begans every 20 minutes and lasted about an hour or so. Enactors do a fantastic job bringing the site alive as it was in 1780/81. They also have other re-enactments annually.
This area was originally one of the first settlements in upper state SC. Ninety Six was the seat of the Old Ninety Six District which covered upper SC. An Indian agent by the name of Goudy had a trading post here in the mid 1700s.
For those interested in Laurens County, SC, try the book titled "Sketches of Laurens County, SC" by Edna Foy who was a teacher near Laurens in Laurens County in mid 1900s. It is a wonderful book which gives a true picture of life in the late 1700s to early 1900s and tells about some of the people who were responsible for settlements in this area. The Laurens County Public Library has many items and books for researchers on their historical county.
At DeWitt's Corner near Due West, SC, representatives of the Cherokee Nation met in 1777 with representatives of the government to sign a treaty giving all lands in present South Carolina to the settlers.
Everyone who has a relative with Alzheimer's knows how
devastating it can be; especially those who take care of
their loved one. The National Caregiving Foundation has
a Caregiver's Support Kit for free, so if you need one or know
someone who could use one, call 1-800-930-1357 to request
it. This kit is extremely nice and useful. It is helpful for
those who care for loved ones with other serious diseases.
If you would like to comment, please sign my guestbook. PLEASE leave your email address in the url box so I can contact you thanking you for visiting or to answer a question you may ask. Some fail to do so and I have no way to answer a question they have asked or give them some information on their ancestor. If you haven't received an answer, this is the reason. E-mail me at [email protected]. I would like to hear from those who would like me to post more SC history on this page and anyone with questions or suggestions.
