Welcome! I thought that I would use this page to update everyone on Jonathon's recent surgery. He had surgery on Tuesday, July 13th and it went very well. We drove to Latham, NY (near Albany) and got to the Doctor's office at 8:30am. Everyone was extremely friendly, making sure that we knew what would happen, and what to expect. Jonathon received a general anesthetic and the whole surgery took about 15 minutes! The surgery is called a "pulse-dye laser" surgery, and was done to reduce the size and appearance of the small, vascular "freckles" on his face that are a result of his medical condition. This procedure was reccomended by his Pediatrician at the end of the school year, due to a number of issues. The first was that the spots were increasing in size and color and since they are completely vascular they were also becoming very sensitive to touch. Trust me...it's hard enough to get a 10 year old boy to wash his face without it hurting every time! Another concern was that, again..because they are vascular, they would begin to break open and bleed. The third concern was Jonathon's, and the fact that children at school were starting to tease him about the way his face looked. These 3 issues led us to a Dermatologist, and later to a Facial Plastic Surgeon.
As you will see in the photos below, the change in just 10 days is wonderful. Not only are the spots reduced in color, almost none of them are raised or "bumpy" anymore. The change in Jonathon is wonderful, as well. He's become so much more confident in talking with people, even explaining the surgery to them. He did experience some swelling, mainly on the right side of his face, which we were told to expect. Alot of the swelling was due to our inability to get him to sit still for very long with his ice packs on! Jonathon had his surgery on Tuesday, and on Thursday travelled to his Grandparents with Dad and Joshua for 5 days, where he rode his bike, played outside with Grandpa's dog, picked berries, and helped Daddy with some carpentry work!
Please, feel free to look through the photos! More will be added over the next month.
