| Devotional Ideas for Kids! By Wendy Wiebe "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) It is never too early to start daily devotions. Even when my children were in my womb I would lay my hands on my stomach and pray for them, and sing "Jesus Loves Me!" In fact when Bethany was tiny, that was the only song that would calm her if she was fussy. ~ Tell your babies every day that Jesus loves them. ~ Use pictures and toys such as soft animals, puppets, plastic flowers and fruit, to teach your child the stories of creation, Jesus birth, and Noah's Ark. Use your imagination! ~ Teach simple memory verses such as "Be kind to one another." (Eph. 4:32), and "Children obey your parents." (Eph. 6:1) ~ Sing with your kids. ~ Do finger plays. Visit your local Christian bookstore for ideas. ~ Purchase a toddler or preschool Bible storybook. Establish "Bible reading" habits by reading from their 'Bible' everyday. ~Children learn through play. Play age-appropriate games, or allow them to dress up and act out Bible stories. ~ Let older chidlren take turns preparing a devotion (a scripture and thought) to share with the whole family. (This is good practise for any budding preachers!) ~ Pray for your children, and encourage them to talk to Jesus as they would a special friend. Jesus cares about their smallest requests. Be sure to remind them to thank God when their prayers are answered. This is how to build up their faith. Special bonding occurs when the family gets together, sings together, talks together, and eats together. The old adage "the family that prays together stays together" still holds true today. If family devotions have not been a regular routine in your home, then start today with some of these ideas and add some of your own! God bless you! |
