CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/HISTORY:
Rey was born on born on December 12, 1974 in San Diego, CA to
parents who had immigrated from Guadalajara, MX. He grew up in
the Chula Vista, CA area and attended Los Altos Elementary
School, Montgomery Junior High School, and Montgomery High
School. Rey basically grew up in the business because his uncle
was Mexical lucha libre legend Rey Misterio Sr. At a young age,
Rey began idolizing his uncle, the Orginal Tiger Mask (Satoru
Sayama), The Dynamite Kid (Tom Billington), Super Astro, Chumbo
Kando, and other legends. He began training at age eight in
Tijuana, Mexico under Rey Sr., who Rey lived with for much of his
young childhood because his parents traveled so often. He -
alongside future stars like Psichosis, Psichosis' brother, Damien
666, Halloween, Konnan, Junior, and Thunderbird - was trained by
his uncle. When he was about 12, Rey's parents moved to Tijuana,
Mexico. Rey crossed the Mexico-U.S. border every weekday to
attend school in Chula Vista, California. As
"Colibrì," (Spanish for "Hummingbird") Rey
made his pro debut in California against a wrestler named Shamu
on April 30, 1989 at 15 years old. Rey worked shows in Tijuana
and at Hollywood, California bars and received about $20 per
match. He was so small at the the time that older wrestlers were
able to help sneak him into the bars due to him being under age
at the time. While living in Mexico, he first gained an interest
in American wrestling and idolized Ricky Steamboat and Shawn
Michaels. Around this time, too, Rey first met future close
friends Juventud Gerrera, Konnan, Psichosis (one of his training
partners). Rey and Psichosis started out in the business together
and were roommates for three years. Juvi hung out with them very
often and was an awesome wrestler in his own right. Rey's early
relationship with Konnan began at about 13 years old and it was
quite common to see Konnan folding Rey up like an accordian while
practicing submission holds on him. Rey won his first title in
pro wrestling by pinning El Espanto Jr. to win the WWA
Lightweight Title. The exact date of his title win is unknown,
but it was sometime between 8/7/92 and October 1993. In the CBLL
on 10/28/92 in Aguascalientes, MX, Rey pinned Fantasma de la
Quebrada (c) to win the CBLL Mexico D.F. National Welterweight
Title. Then on 2/26/93 in Mexico City, Rey lost his CBLL Mexico
D.F. National Welterweight Title to Heavy Metal (a.k.a. Canelo
Casas) via pinfall. Around this time, Konnan called Rey up and
told him they were opening a new promotion and asked him to come
in, but Rey said that he was too busy to do it at the time
because he was still in high school. Konnan, though, eventually
succeeded in talking him into it and Rey went down for two months
during his summer vacation and just never came back. He met
Antonio Pena (the AAA promoter) for the first time there. Pena
didnt have much time for Rey and the other wrestlers for
the first few months because he was setting up the promotion and
negotiating a TV deal. When he finally finished all of this, he
sat down and watched Rey and his buddies work and was very
impressed. Shortly thereafter, Rey made his AAA debut. His first
major AAA show was TripleMania on 4/30/93 in Mexico City at the
Plazo de Toros Arena in front of 50,000 fans. It
saw Volador, Misterioso, & Rey beat Tony Arce, Vulcano, &
Rocco Valente. A month later on 5/29/93 on an AAA show in
Queretero, Mexico in front of 30,000 fans, Angel Mortal won a
"Three-Way Elimination Loser Unmasks Match" over Rey
and El Bandito. The first elimination came when Rey beat Bandito,
but Angel then pinned Rey to eliminate him and win the bout.
Since he was pinned first, Bandito was forced to unmask. Around
this time, Rey met the late, great Art Barr through Konnan and
became good friends with Barr. Rey wrestled a Best 2/3 Falls
Match at AAA La Revencha on 8/28/93 at the L.A. Sports Arena in
front of 16,742 fans that saw Psicosis, Heavy Metal, & Jerry
Estrada d. Volador, Rey, & Misterioso (24:36). In the first
fall, Volador pinned Estrada and Misterio pinned Metal
simultaneously. Estrada pinned Volador in the second fall and
then Estrada pinned Misterioso (24:36) in the third fall to win
the match for his team. Rey worked WWA in Monterrey, MX by losing
his WWA Lightweight Title that he had won from Espanto Jr. to
Juventud Guerrera via pinfall. The exact date of the title win is
unknown, but it occurred in 10/93. Then, at AAA La Lucha del
Honor on 11/12/93 at the L.A. Sports Arena in front of 11,600
fans, Rey, Misterioso, & Volador beat La Parka, Espectro Jr.,
& Karis la Momia (26:30) in a Best 2/3 Falls Match. Rey's
team won the first fall, Espectro pinned Rey in the second fall,
and Parka, Espectro, and Karis were counted out (26:30) in the
third fall, thereby giving Rey's team the win. Rey's first
notable match in 1994 came on March 12 at AAA at the L.A. Sports
Arena in front of 13,823 fans and it was another Best 2/3 Falls
Match. It saw Espectro Jr., Fuerza Guerrera, & Jerry Estrada
beat Rey, Winners, & Heavy Metal (22:59) in two straight
falls. Estrada pinned Rey and Espectro forced Winners to submit
in the first fall and then Espectro pinned Winners in the second
fall to win the bout. Rey worked AAA TripleMania II - A on
4/26/94 in Aguscalientes, Mexico and teamed up with his uncle,
Rey Misterio (Sr.) and Winners to beat Tony Arce, Vulcano, &
Rocco Valente when Rey pinned Valente. At AAA TripleMania II - B
on 5/15/94 in Zapopan, Mexico at the Benito Juarez Arenaw in
front of 11,200 fans, Rey worked a six-man bout where he teamed
with Rey Sr. & Volador to lose to Misterioso, Fuerza
Guerrera, & Juventud Guerrera in 17:23 when Fuerza forced
Volador to submit (tap out). At the AAA TripleMania II - C show
on 5/27/94 in Tijuana at El Toreo Arena, Rey finally bounced back
in a six-man tag bout where he teamed with Torero and Rey Sr. to
beat Fuerza Guerrera, Fishman, & Pirata Morgan in 16:19 when
Rey pinned Guerrera. Then came Rey's first Pay-Per-View
appearance, which, believe it or not, was NOT in WCW. Instead, it
was at AAA When Worlds Collide on 11/6/94 at the L.A. Sports
Arena in front of 13,000 fans and saw Fuerza Guerrera, Madonna's
Boyfriend (a.k.a. Louie Spicolli), & Psicosis beat Rey, Heavy
Metal, & Latin Lover in 12:54 when Guerrera forced Metal to
submit. The PPV received a .24 buyrate. Rey wrestled Juventud
Gerrera in a WWA match on 11/30/94 in Matamoros, Mexico to regain
the WWA Lightweight Title that he had lost in 10/93 to Juvi. At
some time in early 1995 (the date nor even the month is known),
Rey (the current WWA Lightweight Champ) & Rey Sr. beat The
Villanos (Villano IV & Villano V) to win the Villanos' WWA
World Tag Team Titles, but lost the titles to Juventud Guerrera
& Fuerza Guerrera in a tag team match on 2/3/95 in either
Jarapa or Xalapas, Mexico (I found conflicting locations when I
researched this title change). Due to prematch stipulations, Juvi
wins Rey's WWA Lightweight Title and Fuerza and Juvi win
the Mysterio's WWA World Tag Team Titles. Rey bounced back,
though, on 4/14/95 in Mexico City by teaming with Octagon &
Muñeco to beat Tony Arce, Vulcano, & Rocco Valante (c's) to
win the CBLL Mexico D.F. Trios Title...WWA (6/16/95; Queretearo):

"Mexican Death Match," Rey Misterio
Jr. pins Psichosis (14:47) after hitting a
Huracanrana off of the eagle's nest (balcony) for the
unanswered three count. The rules of a Mexican Death
Match are this: Once somebody pins their opponent, the
opponent has 10 seconds after the three count is made to
make it back to their feet. If they don't within that
amount of time, then their opponent wins. The match: Rey
twice pins Psichosis, but Psichosis gets up both times
before the 10 count is completed. Psichosis then pins Rey
four straight times in a row,
but Rey gets up each and every time before the 10 count
is completed (albeit w/ seconds to spare a few times).
Rey then pins Psichosis after the Eagle's Nest 'rana, and
Psichosis doesn't answer. Misterio wins (rating: about
**3/4, just like they're above match [their ECW debuts]).
After the match, The Eliminators (John Kronus & Perry
Saturn) run out and help Jason beat down Rey until the
colossal 911 makes the save for Rey...Rey wrestled
Psychosis in a non-tournament match at the WAR Super J
Cup on 12/13/95 at Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan in front of
about 11,500 fans. It was a great Lucha-style match
filled with many awesome highspots. Rey hit a Super

at about ****1/2. This was both men's last match in ECW

debuted in WCW live on the Great American Bash '96
Pay-Per-View (6/16/96; Baltimore, MD). He challenged
then-champion Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight
