- SWAT Revival (2/9/02; The Crystal Palace): The next match
was undoubtedly the match of the night. Jody Fleisch and
Jonny Storm collectively displayed one of the most
thrilling and exciting matches Ive ever seen. The
opening exchanges between the two were fluid and
flawless, and were reminiscent of Rob Van Dam versus
Jerry Lynn. The two began exchanging chops in the middle
of the ring to WHOOOs from the crowd
before eventually both refraining and dashing out of the
ring to grab the ladder that perched at ringside. The
first ladder induced spot came when Storm hit a
somersault senton on Fleisch from the top on the outside
of the ring. This was a moment which provoked loud and
lengthy Holy Shit and FWA!
chants, and it certainly wasnt the last. From there
Storm proceeded to hit Fleisch with the ladder and knock
him up the ramp eventually setting the runged contraption
up, preparing one of the spots of the night. With Strom
whipping him towards the ladder, Fleisch ran up the
ladder with a speedy elegance and performed a moonsault.
It was genuinely scary as Fleischs legs clashed
with the metal structure that was in place above the
ramp, some 20 feet above the ground. The fans
collectively held their breath and emitted a low He
continued undeterred and the ladder was eventually placed
in the ring. More breathtaking spots ensued, with Storm
hitting a scintillating rewind frankensteiner from the
top of the ladder, as well as a Rock Bottom variant and
Diamond Cutter from the top of the ladder. Fleisch scored
the win with the amazing Phoenix 720 DDT. The fans gave a
deserving standing ovation for the two who left shaking
hands. Bill Apter was later reported to have described
this as Rey and Juvi at their very best. This
match has to be seen to be believed.
That was what I wrote after the match. It's such a shame
that this match was never broadcast in it's entirety. The
'Revival' special allowed only 2 minutes of this match to
be shown. The full footage will never see the light of
day. Truly a forgotten classic, but not for those who saw
it in person.
