GEORGE'S PAGE
To say that this page is dedicated to the memory of my Husband - George Arthur Baker, sounds a bit morbid - but as I was devoted to him and really proud of all that he achieved and stood for - never-the-less , it is !!!
While he was with me we were more than husband and wife, we were best friends and Soul Mates. We shared our hobby of Metal Detecting - he was the Chairman of the Local Club as I was Secretary for the last 15 years of his life.
I am proud to say that George was the founder of one of our local beauty spots - a childrens favourite in our area called Pets Corner, Finney
Gardens, Bucknall Park, Stoke-on-Trent.    Way Back in the 1970's, when our Citys Police Force joined Staffordshire County, their old sports ground - which happened to be attached to Bucknall Park - became redundant, and so the City Parks Department as it was then known acquired it and my husband's superior, Mr Angus Carmichael sent for George and told him "We have brought you Finney Gardens, there is no extra money and no extra manpower available to you - see what you can make of it !"  At around the same time a lady approached the Parks and Leisure Department  and asked if they could find a home for a couple of Peacocks and a Peahen ......and that is where it all began.  A couple of rabbits were added and then an aviary of small birds - an abandoned donkey and an old Goat with no horns called William joined the crew and Pets Corner was born. George and his men worked very hard, and the place became a credit to them - parents throughout the area brought their children to see the animals and it became 'Famed' throughout the City.   George took early retirement in 1990 after 36 years with the Parks Department - but Finney Gardens is still there today and now boasts a Minature Railway with three steam engines which tour the park and at the Station end you will find a Bouncy Castle on most weekends,a small Cafe, Tennis Courts, Bowling Greens and a Public Car Park.
