June Prayer Letter

This month I decided to write my prayer letter in a different way. I wanted to include lots more than what I usually say, and I wanted to make it look different from the usual format.

Since my last prayer letter, I have been focusing on a small church in southern Taiwan as interim pastor while the missionary that is usually responsible for it is in the USA. Each Saturday I ride the express train 3 hours or so to Kaohsiung and switch to a local one to go 8 more minutes to the city of Fengshan. From there I get a taxi to go to the church in the suburb of Taliao.

If you want to see how I reserve my train ticket each week before I pick it up at a nearby post office, you can go to this site: Taiwan Train

You would enjoy meeting the people that attend this small church: (Click the picture to see it more clearly.)

Mr. Li--a brilliant professor who majored in philosophy (He has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Philosophy)

Mr. Huang--a very articulate man who can express himself well both in Chinese and in English--He keeps us up on the present complex political situation in Taiwan.

Mr. X--I still don't know his name. He comes at the last minute, sits on the back row and pays close attention throughout the whole service and slips out immediately afterwards. I hurry to the back to say good-bye, but he says nothing! He comes every week.

Miss Lu--She is always helping, always busy. She accompanies the service, picks up people on the way to church and drives them home, helps with food when necessary--just always working.

Mrs. Zhang-jian--Did you know that some Chinese surnames are two syllables? Yes, there are just a few that are double. She feels funny if you call her by this name though. She's a not-so-young mother of a very small girl. Maybe you can identify with the way she has to run after her energetic daughter.

Mr. Wang is our youngest Christian. He has heard the gospel for years from his wife, but only recently did he trust Christ. He works in his own business repairing cameras.

Miss Gao--She is an active student of the Bible. She reads the Bible (she's on Leviticus now) both in Chinese and in English--and doesn't settle for anything other than the KJV! Each Sunday she corners me with a sheaf of questions like, "If a leper was unclean, then why was he clean if the whole body was white?"

Miss Huang--She is the landlady of the church. She owns this four-story building and rents the first two floors to the church. On occasion she attends church and sometimes brings her teenaged son. Please pray for their salvation.

When I stop going to this church, I think I will miss seeing these people. But, maybe I can go back in a few months to preach for them again.

Lately, I was asked to preach at a wedding in Singapore. Do you want to see what food was served at the wedding reception?

Then I was asked to speak for a church camp in Indonesia. Here you can see some of us on the ferry.

I have had fun working on a new website lately. If you want to see it, please email me.
