"Looking foolish does the spirit good. The need not to look foolish is one of youth's many burdens; as we get older we are exempted from more and more."
John Updike
Last night, I was about to get in the hot tub to watch "Desperate Housewives" and my parents called. They were trying to get a tape in their VCR. They couldn't get it in. I told them twice to turn on the power and push the eject button to see if there was another tape in it. They insisted there wasn't. I finally convinced them the third time and they got the tape in after they removed the other one. My mom scolded me for watching "Desperate Housewives" because it's "immoral." The irony is that her two favorite movies (which I bought for her) are "Pretty Woman" (the one they were trying to watch last night) and "Dirty Dancing." Go figure.
Last Wednesday, Greg and Peggy came back from California for a week. She's going to her final Gifted/Talented educators meeting in Sun Valley today and tomorrow. We became friends years ago when my children were younger and in her G/T program. Through our conversations, we learned that we share a lot of the same philosophies. We've become great friends. I'll fly to San Diego next March to spend some time with them and our friends there.
Greg is certainly feeling better. We played 27 holes of golf both Thursday and Friday. Saturday was a riot. The Clements came over from Boise. We all played the final couples' tournament together. It's a tournament that we call "The Divorce Open." The format is six holes each of Chapman (both tee off, hit each other's tee shots then alternate shots from there,) a two-person scramble and Scotchball. The Scotchball is where is it gets dicey. It's alternating shots all the way. If one or the other screws up, that's when the eyebrows raise and the "looks" are exchanged. Nobody took any of it too seriously. The six of us laughed the day away like a bunch of giddy kids. The dinner after was nice, too. Those two couples used to frequently hang out in the hot tub with us. With Robert working so far away from home and Clantons living in California most of the time, it's taken some getting used to. It was a great reunion for all of us.
It's looking like golf season is coming to an end now. If so, I loved soaking in the last warm, sunny days of September. I savored every shot. It was a treat to play golf in shorts and t-shirts and enjoy the early fall beauty. It's been a great summer free of the hassles I was facing last summer.
We had been wondering what to do for Thanksgiving this year. After my parents' fighting here last Thanksgiving when Mel and Jeff were here, we decided we're not going to have that kind of tension in our house for another holiday. We were all pissed at them for acting like such uncaring juveniles. Well, Val and Sus called Thursday night and asked us to meet them in Jackpot, NV for Thanksgiving. Her sister works at Cactus Pete's and got a great deal for us. Val and Sus decided to get away from all their kids for awhile. They'll bring her mother with them, too. She loves gambling. Her mom is now living with them. It was quicker than they'd planned. I had planned to spend this week with them but I won't now that her mom is moved in and has "my room." Her house sold in one week. They changed their minds about building another house. They chose to build onto the one they're in. They'll build on an apartment for her mom. It's such a nice house and in a good location, I hated to see them sell it and start over. They decided that moving again wasn't what they wanted to do for fun either.
R only has about a week or two left in Alpine, WY then he'll be at Teton Village outside of Jackson, WY. I'll spend some time in Jackson. The Red Lion hotel's beds are absolutely addictive. Until I slept there a few years ago when he working there, I thought I had the best bed I'd ever slept in. Now mine is second best. I still love it though.
That's all that's in my head for now. Later...
