Yesterday, we had a good, long conversation with our son who recently returned from his second Iraq deployment. There was so much about his trip that he wanted to share with us but couldn't. He said it was like living in a combination of a James Bond movie, "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Black Hawk Down." It made me shudder.
I asked him about the Army refusing to buy Israeli-made RPG interceptors called the Trophy system. When I read the story last week, I was angry that our government wouldn't employ any method available to protect our soldiers. Raytheon has a big contract with the Pentagon to develop a similar system which won't be available until about 2010. I figured it was another bunch of Dubya's buddies looking to cash in further. My son set me straight and said that the Trophy is NOT that effective. I got over it.
When I asked him if Rummy should go, he stopped short of saying yes but, admitted that many mistakes had been made in the planning and execution of this war. He tries to remain apolitical so I didn't pursue the subject any further. He reminded me that I read and watch too much news. I think he's right. Already this morning, I've seen and heard too much so it's time for coffee, some tunes, crosswords and a Sudoku puzzle.
