Finally,
the time has come. The follow up to the 95 surprise hit Desperado
is
finally here and I just hope it is all worth the wait. Robert
Rodriguez is back with his 'designer violence' with Once
Upon A Time In Mexico.

Though
the film was completed way back in 2002, for some strange
reason it was held back till Rodriguez completed and released
his final installment of the Spy Kids trilogy- Spy
Kids 3D.
But now with that trilogy out of the way, its time to wrap up
the El
Mariachi trilogy.
Once
Upon A Time In Mexico
is actually a part of a trilogy that started way back in 92
with El
Mariachi,
which was followed later with Desperardo.
However most people would still see this flick as a 'Desperado
2' because afterall it was Desperado that really made Antonio
Banderas an overnight action star and Rodriguez a director to
watch out for.
The saga of the mythic guitar-slinging hero, El Mariachi
(Antonio
Banderas),
continues in Robert Rodriguez’s bold, non-stop action epic
ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO.
The new adventure is set against a backdrop of
revolution and greed. Haunted and scarred by loss, El Mariachi
(Banderas)
has retreated into a life of isolation. He is forced out of
hiding by Sands (Johnny
Depp), a
corrupt CIA agent. Sands recruits the reclusive hero to
sabotage a plot by the evil cartel kingpin Barillo (Willem
Dafoe), who
is planning to assassinate the president of Mexico. El
Mariachi has his own reasons for returning – retribution and
revenge.
Now, together with his capable cohorts Lorenzo (Enrique
Iglesias)
and Fideo (Marco
Leonardi)
the legend of El Mariachi attains new levels of excitement.

Rodriguez
should be highly appreciated for one thing....he knows how to
make movies fast and dirt cheap. Everyone knows that he had to
struggle to get his debut El
Mariachi
made, which even had him volunteering for medical experiments
to get the finance done. Then he had a direct-to-cable flick
titled RoadRacers
which was a 13-day shoot.
Hollywood,
the big mean industry however took notice only when his 7
million flick, Desperado managed to do phenomenal business in
the international circuit, even if not in the domestic one.
From then on it was no looking back for Rodriguez who went on
to make From
Dusk Till Dawn before
Rodriguez unleashed the family friendly trilogy of SPY
KIDS.
The
best part about Rodriguez and his style of film making is that
his projects are financially very viable. Even his last flick,
SPY
KIDS 3D
was made in just a mere 38 million bucks, and that was
recovered in its first week itself. Undoubtedly the kind
of directors that any industry would be proud to have.

Back
to the movie, Once
Upon A Time In Mexico
is obviously like any of your kick ass western flicks, but
with a total Latino-Mexican flava to the whole thing. And
Rodriguez gets his usual buddies like Danny Trejo, Cheech
Marin to give company to the returning leads Antonio Banderas
and Salma Hayek.
But
that is just the beginning of the awesome cast list. Because
we also have Johnny Depp playing yet another leading role,
while Willem Defoe has been casted as the main villain. To get
the spice going, add to that sexy Eva Mendes and even popstar
Enrique Iglesias.

Obviously
having Johnny Depp in the cast is only going to work in
the movie's favor, because after the outstanding success of Pirates
of the Caribbean,
Johnny Depp is certainly in great demand. And hopefully Depp
will now prove that he can also carry an action role as good
as those eccentric character he usually excels in portraying.
Waiting
for the movie for something kick-ass. We have hunks, babes,
guns and lots of explosive action. Hope Once Upon A Time In
Mexico can take things a step forward.
