A
young couple Alex and Nancy (Ben
Stiller & Drew Barrymore)
finds their perfect Brooklyn duplex apartment. So perfect that
even if it is a little costly, there don't care, for they
firmly believe that this is the home they need to take the
next big step in life.
But
they have one big problem. While they themselves can barely
cover the cost of the duplex, they have a tenant who has
rented the second floor for a ceiled price and simply refuses
to leave. So much so, the owners have come and gone, but the
old 'sweet' lady upstairs, Mrs. Connely (Eileen
Essell)
stays.
You
think it is a sweet lady...think again. She is not as sweet
and poor as you think she is, for she has no regrets
disturbing everyone around her. She becomes more expensive for
the couple to handle than the apartment itself. And one of her
weapons seems to be her human attacking parrot that she use to
teach others a lesson.
The
couple has no other option but to keep Mrs Connelly happy.
Even going to the cops is no use since Connelly herself is a
widow of a policeman, so she has the support of the police
force too.
And
in such a helpless situation, Nancy suggest jokingly to Alex
about killing off the old lady. And then the game
starts.
The
couple try everything in their books to kill the lady, but
unfortunately nothing ever seems to go right.
The
premise looks good enough to make a great comedy and it could
turn out to be a big 'surprise' comedy hit like There's
Something About Mary
or Meet
the Parents.
Ben Stiller has the knack to pull off these comedies
successfully. And with Drew Barrymore keeping him
company, I am sure there is a good chance that more people
will check out the movie.
Two
another factors that will probably work for this movie is the
director and the screenwriter. Danny De Vito seems to
be the perfect guy to direct such kind of comedy with
murderous intentions. He is quite good with dark comedies, but
in this he probably will go all out in a real 'all out silly'
comic way. I really hope they make it all out wacky and
I am sure it will be great fun.
The
other reason is Larry Doyle who will be making his
debut in screenwriting with this flick. But being one of the
man behind the Simpsons
script, you can expect things to be real wacky fun. And if his
script works in this one, then that will obviously raise my
hopes for his next flick too which is Looney
Tunes Back in Action.
By
the way, the film is a co-production by Stiller and Barrymore
themselves. And by all means, I would have been placing my
bets on this flick....but the frequent shift of release dates
for this one is giving me the doubts.
