1. Look up the Vera.  How might Saki's choice of this be considered verbal irony? - meaning of the name

The meaning of Vera is truth. This is extremely ironic because throughout the entire story she is telling a lie, and one would think she would tell the truth because she is named after it!

2.  In what ways is the story's last line ironic?

The storys last line is ironic because throughout the entire story it would seem that Vera is telling the truth, and, after Framton bolts out the door and the husband and brothers are in the house, the author tells the reader that basically everything that she said was made up. Romance at short notice was her specialty.

3.  Find two other ironic statements in the story.

A. "The doctors agree in ordering me complete rest, an absence of mental excitement, and avoidance of anything in the nature of violent physical exercise,"
This is ironic because the doctors tell Framton to have complete rest, and no physical exercise, yet he bolts out the door so fast he causes a cyclist to run into some bushes.

B. "A most extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel," said Mrs. Sappleton
This is Ironic because Mr. Nuttel, or Framton, is definitely not extraordinary. He is a dull, socially-challenged person.

4. What is the point of view in the story? How does the point of view create irony?

Third-person limited; the narrator doesnt explain everything, but leaving information for the reader to interpret. This creates irony because it doesnt let the reader know that Vera is lying, creating irony at the end of the story.

5. Identify important character traits of Framton Nuttel and Vera. What action and lines of dialogue are the most important in the development of their characters?

Framton is extremely dull, socially challenged, nervous, and socially-challenged, while Vera is cunning, sneaky, intelligent.
