(5) Waking Up Lady Jupiter (ladyjupiter@sailorjupiter.com) Sailor Jupiter flew across the planks and was thrown against the side of an anchored ship. After a few seconds of being dazed, she sprung up, ready for another round. She started off a chain of fireworks with a Thunder Dragon, a Thunder Clap, a few quick punches, and finally ended it by pulling her opponent by the feet, swung her in circles a few times then throwing her into some nearby crates. That was not the end, however. The opponent, Sailor Venus got out of the broken boxes and high jumped towards an unsuspecting Jupiter. It was too late when Jupiter turned, catching a kick right in the jaw, an uppercut as she was about to leap away, a sweep, knocking her off her feet and onto the ground with a thud. "Gotcha!" Sailor Jupiter struggled to get up and shouted, "C'mon, do it again! It felt good!" Sailor Venus, never one to back away from a challenge launched the same attack, but was interupted in the middle by a bullet speed, lightning covered fist, knocking her down, taking all her blood and leaving Sailor Jupiter the winner. "No fair! You used your desperation attack!" Mina shouted, throwing the controller down. "Too bad, that's what you get for patterning me. Besides, you could have blocked it." Lita promptly deffended. "But I didn't know-" "You should have kept your eyes on my blood meter then. I win again," Lita smiled smugly. "Rematch!" Mina shouted. Lita put her controller down, "I won you three out of four times already. Let's play something else." "No, I want to get my revenge!" Mina shouted as shrilly as Serena. "Wow, you guys sure take that game seriously. If I didn't know better, I would have thought the two of you thought you were scouts or something." Ken remarked from the sofa he was sitting on. Large sweat droplets could have been seen on the two girls who grinned nervously. "Hah, that'll be the day." Mina covered up. "Yeah, we wish." Lita agreed. Both girls gave each other warning looks. "Here, you can play with Ken." Lita handed the controller to Ken and went to sit on the sofa as he went to sit before the television. "Get ready to meet your doom," Mina warned, once again picking Sailor Venus. "You sure pick her a lot," Ken noticed. "Well, she *is* the best scout," Mina replied. "Is not," Lita objected from the back. "Is too." "Then how come Sailor Jupiter always beats her?" Lita demanded. That kept Mina silent for a while. Ken chose to fight as Sailor Jupiter. "Are you chosing her just because Lita said she always wins?" Mina asked. "Yeah, and she's cute." Ken replied absently. Lita smiled secretively to herself. Although no one had told Ken about the scouts or anything to do with his other life, he seemed to be getting a long pretty well with her other friends. It was always strange how people see the whole group of scouts together in their civilian form, but can never put two and two together and realize who they were. After all this time, Serena's friend Molly still didn't have a clue who the Sailor Scouts were. Before she knew it, Lita had gone bought her ticket and was on her train ride to La-la land. There, she thought of the strange reacurring dream she had been having for the past week. First, it would start off dark, pitch black without solidness, as if she were flying. Then, slowly, a white explosion would occur, and she would be floating through fluffy white clouds. "Hello?! Anyone home?" Mina snapped her fingers in front of Lita's vacant eyes, trying to get a reaction. "C'mon, Lita. You're getting as spacey as Serena nowadays." Finally, Lita snapped out of it and frowned, "What?" She looked over at the television screen as a large "game over" sign blinked. "You gamed over already? My turn." As if nothing had happened, Lita continued to play. Around seven or eight in the evening, after they had gobbled down a pizza, Mina decided to leave. "So soon?" Lita asked. "Yeah, I have to. You know what Artemis will do-" Mina stopped short just as she caught herself from spilling the beans. "Artemis? Isn't that your cat?" Ken asked. "Uh, yeah. He gets jealous and feels neglected when I come home too late." Mina filled in. It wasn't a whole lie. "Strange pet," Ken remarked. "I'll see you guys another day," Mina waved and left the apartment. After another five or so rounds of gaming, Lita finally quit and turned off her television set, which was practically smoking by then. She joined Ken on the couch and looked down at what he was doing. Sprawled before him on the coffee table and over a portion of the couch were books, loose papers and a couple of pencils. If Lita didn't know better, she would have thought she was in Ami's room. "Take a break. You've been studying too hard," Lita advised. Ken shook his head, "No, I have to catch up." Ever since the accident with him loosing his memory, Ken had to learn a couple of things all over again. That inclulded the recent math he had learned this year, chemistry, and most of the subjects he took this year. He was almost normal now and one wouldn't be able to realize he had had amnesia a while back by just looking. In fact, he had even gotten ahead that he was in some of his subjects. "You're beginning to sound like Ami." Lita mumbled lazily. Ken put his pencil down and leaned back. "You never told me how you and your friends met. It seems to me like you guys are so different, it would have been impossible for you guys to all meet." Lita leaned her head on his shoulder and shrugged, "You could say we drifted towards each other." A yawn was creeping up on Ken. He let it out and sighed, "Maybe a small break. Then I'll get back to the work." He looked down at Lita, her eyes half open cat-like and dreamy. Her lips were slightly parted and he could easily reach down and kiss her. No, that wasn't what he did. He didn't kiss her because he knew, that those lips would always be there for him. The small break turned out to be a pretty length nap in which a dream took place. **** As he awakened, he was staring right into a pair of insect eyes. Two lare colorful wings expanded slowly as the insect perched on his nose noticed he had waken. Almost jumping a full foot into the air, the ex-sleeper shook his head, shooing the rainbow butterfly away. "Heh, it would be bad for the brave and gallant Jupiter Knight to be afraid of a small butterfly," he laughed to himself. He readjusted his seating position slightly and gazed up into the now setting sun. Through the pink summer atmosphere, the sun looked like a perfectly round wad of bubble gum, surrounded by a hallow of orange clouds. "Shino-chan," the young lady with her head resting on his arm murmured, "You are talking in your sleep." Shinozaki smiled as she hugged his arm tighter. It was getting chilly outside and looked like rain was about to happen. As gently as he could manage, he lifted her up and started to carry her out of the small secluded clearing in the back forest and up to the castle. It would have been a long and tiresome walk there with such a weight in his arms, but today, he felt no pain. Only happiness, a glowing in his heart that pulsated with every beat through the tips of his fingers and driving him on. On the way up the castle, the Princess was talking in her sleep again. Not in mumbles, but perfectly articulated sentances making as much sense as she did when fully awake. Shinozaki grinned as he heard the Princess talk about some imaginary battle tactic while an evil witch was winning. It was like she was telling a faerie tale. When finally, he reached the room he was staying in, he tenderly put her down on his bed and covered her up. Knowing that she'd probably be asleep for a while, he went out of his room to let her be and went to take a shower. Sighing, Mako stretched, enjoying the feeling as her muscles tightened and she extended her feet, touching the end of the blanket. When was the last time she had slept as soundly and peacefully? She felt as if she was sleeping on a bowl of jello and the slow motions were calming all her thoughts of extremeties. "Wake up, sunshine." A familiar voice whispered to her. She could feel his breath against her cheeks and opened her eyes only to find a pair of dark blue eyes gazing back at her. She gasped in surprised. "What are you doing in my room?" "What are you doing in my room," he repeated with a grin. Propped on his elbows and kneeling by the bed, he looked like a mischeivious little boy instead of the responsible and gallant knight he was. True, as Mako looked around at the few framed paintings on the walls, the color of the plush carpet, the location of furniture and even where the window was facing, she realized it wasn't her room. Quickly, she bounded up, fastening a loose hair into her clip and with eyes as wide was the pearly gates, she questioned. "How did I get in here?" With that silly grin still on his face, Shinosaki answered, "Don't you remember? You fell asleep under the tree. It looked like rain and I decided to bring you in." Outside, the rain was falling softly on the ground, making a "plop" sound as it hit the windows. Near summer was the season and the rain was starting to fall less this time of year. Yet, when it did fall, it lasted for a long while, almost three days straight, then there would be another wide span of dryness. "Did anyone see you bring me in here?" a concerened princess asked. He could get into big trouble if there was anyone who saw and decided to tell a higher authority. Shinosaki got up and walked to her, "Yes, as I was carrying you, I passed the sewing lady. Unfortunately, she was in an observant mood today and asked me whether I was going to bring you up to my room. Not wanting to lie, I confirmed that notion and suddenly, a light lit up in her eyes." "Oh no," breathed Makoto softly, here eyes getting bigger by the minute as her skin paled. The sewing lady was the center of gossip. She could take any lame sentance, embellish it with what she pleased, whisper it into another servant's ears, and soon, it'll be the most talked about issue on the planet. Cracking a half grin, Shinosaki tucked one of her loose hairs behind her ear. "Mako-chan, you're so gullible." "You're so mean," Makoto laughed and started to move away. She stopped right before the door and turned back, saying over her shoulder, "I'll see you at dinner. Don't forget." "I won't," he promised and let her out. **** "Ken, wake up." Lita jiggled his elbow for about the twenty-fifth time. "What?" Ken mumbled, turning around on the couch into another sleeping position. "Jeeze, you're worse than Serena!" Lita rolled her eyes and shook him harder. She even slapped him a few times, but he would only half waken for a few seconds before dozing off again. Lita gave up trying to awaken him and went into the kitchen to get a "light" snack instead. When she returned, she had a platter of roast beef sandwiches, a bowl of tomato soup and a cup of milk. By the table, she crossed her legs and sat down to eat. Just as she sank her teeth into the tantalizing meal, something beeped. The sound was all too familiar. "What is it?" Lita asked into her communicator. Sailor Mars stared back at her. "Trouble. It's at the West Juuban Cemetary. Try to get here ASAP, and bring some flashlights. We're kind of having trouble." Sailor Mars admitted. From what she could see, Lita deducted that Sailor Mars was standing under a streetlamp that gave barely sufficient lighting. "Where is that?" "You know, the cemetary a couple miles from that wierd shop with the shoes," Sailor Mars replied impatiently. "Okay, I'm on my way." Lita tucked her communicator back into her pocket and stood up. The food would have to wait. She cast a glance at Ken, who was just as she left him. After jotting a few excuses down and fastening it to Ken's fallen book, Lita took off. On the way down the steps, she tripped over some green paint which the hangers were using to re-paint the iron gate around her complex. She muttered a couple of "darn's" and ran off, not bothering to change out of her now ruined tennis shoes. A few minutes later, Sailor Jupiter emerged from the entrance of the cemetary carrying three large flashlights, the kind stored for emergencies, and two pocket lights. She searched around for familiar forms and saw two round familiar looking meatballs peaking from above a tombstone. "Sailor Moon!" Jupiter shouted. "Shh!" Came a hushed voice and a hand hulled her behind another tombstone. Mercury crouched there and filled her w/ details, "There was some wierd noise coming from the cemetary noticed by Luna and we came here. My readings show Nega-activity, but we couldn't spot any so far." Jupiter took this time to look around and saw various shapes behind tombstones, up on trees, and even an all too familiar top-hat jutting out of a bush. She passed the flashlights around and shared one with Mercury. They were there for so long that her legs were starting to ache. Sailor Jupiter was about to stand up to stretch but felt something. It started out as a low rumble, a foreshadow of a destructive quake. The ground shook with vigor beneath them like waves crashing against rocks. The sound of an explosion was heard, but they could see no rupture point. Almost as suddenly as it started, the quake died down. "Something tells me that wasn't one of our usual earth quakes," Sailor Mars said. "It's right below us," Sailor Mercury warned. Just as she issued her warning, things started getting wierder. The grass grew so suddenly that in a timespan of five seconds, no one could see anything because the grass was at least ten feet tall and unbending. "What the-" Tuxedo Mask emerged from his bush and whaked at the grass, only to have it grow longer. A low growl startled everybody. "Please tell me that was your stomach, Sailor Moon." Sailor Venus begged. "I wish it was," Sailor Moon's voice trembled. Sailor Jupiter parted a handful of grass like a curtain and rolled her eyes, "Where's the lawnmower when you need one?" Soon, they saw where the growl came from. At first, the smell hit them, then it was the site that surprised them the most. There was a pungent aroma in the air, like day old chicken skin rotting in the sun. The owner of that BO was a nearly eight feet tall zombie. That was the best they could do in describing it. It looked like a zombie, but that's what all Nega-youmas looked like, but it also looked like a fresh scarecrow. Fresh meaning the hay was not dead yet. To put it basically, it was a chia-zombie. "What the hell happened to that?!" Sailor Jupiter shouted after gaining her balance again. "Looks like someone fell asleep in a pool of algae and plankton or some other intertidal zone growth," Sailor Mercury explained. "What?!" Everyone turned for a further explanation of what she exactly said. "Forget it," Sailor Mercury waved, "Let's just get rid of this vision pollution so I can get back to my studying." "If you say so," Sailor Mars started her attack sequence..... "Not so fast!" The chia-zombie shouted. He sneezed and out came hundreds of small gremlin like miniature versions of it. "This is going to be a long night," Sailor Venus muttered. Ken woke up only to find himself alone on the couch. He got up, feeling disoriented and walked toward the table, which was set with a small dish of food. Beside the food, there was a small post it note on his spoon, with the strong penmanship of Lita's scrawled across it. He read it, then crumbled it in his hand. "Lita?" Ken called out. No answer. This was getting all too familiar. Lita would always leave randomly with some off the top of her head excuse and never tell him where she was really going. Sometimes, she would say there was an emergency at her friend's house, like Serena or Ami, but when he called there, they wouldn't be home either. Knowing from experience, Ken knew she wouldn't be home for a long time. He locked up her windows and started his way out, back to his house. On the way down, he noticed a couple of fallen paint cans, green paint spilled everywhere on the bottom step. Emerging from the puddle of paint were footprints of tennis shoes. An idea sprung in his head. Ken followed the foot prints outside, and as they led down the street, he jogged after them. A feeling of certainty was in his head...he just KNEW this would lead to something that would unravel the mystery behind Lita. "Too bad Jupiter Knight isn't here," Sailor Jupiter whispered to Sailor Venus. Both were hiding behind a large statue in the cemetary. The small chia-gremlins had scattered around the whole cemetary and it was a treasure hunt to find them. Most of the time, the critters would find the scouts instead and if they weren't fast enough, the scouts would get a few scratches. "Yeah, but you know-" Sailor Venus reminded. "I know. I think we should hold the truth off a little longer. He seems so happy and carefree now." Sailor Jupiter replied. "No time to gossip!" Sailor Moon shrieked as she ran past them, five or six small gremlins on her tail. Sailor Jupiter ran after her, blasting a few gremlins when she could and trying to avoid the various tombstones jutting out from the mossy grass. No matter how many she shot down, more appeared from no where. Finally, seeing that Sailor Moon wasn't in any immediate danger as long as she kept up with the running because those small critters were like computers, give them directions and that's all they do, Sailor Jupiter stopped and looked for Sailor Mercury. There had to be an easier way than this. "Any new info?" Sailor Jupiter asked, finding Mercury sitting ontop of a tree. From the tree, she saw Sailor Mars and Tuxedo Mask taking on the large chia-youma and they were holding off pretty well with an occasional yelp from Sailor Moon who was still being chased. "Apparantly, these small creatures are unlimited. They just keep going and going, and no matter how many you shoot down, more takes its place." Mercury explained. "I don't like the sound of that. What are we supposed to do now?" Sailor Mercury shrugged, "There's nothing to do about the small ones, so we'll have to concentrate on the large youma. Hopefully, when that one is destroyed, the small ones will disappear." "Great, we're being attacked by chia-pets." Sailor Jupiter rolled her eyes. "What will they think of next?" Almost....almost.....almost there. Ken stopped to catch his breath. He had been running for miles already and the green paint was getting fainter. Finally, it disappeared as the footprints crossed the street. Ken stood there, dumbfounded. He knew he was somewhere in town, but he had been concentrating so hard at following the trail of green paint that he didn't bother to pay attention to where he was running to. Just as he was about to look for a pay phone and call home, he heard a familiar sounding voice. "-energy sucking race cars?" He knew that voice anywhere, even if it was a strange thing to be saying. Although the voice wasn't loud, he could hear it clearly and distinctly amongst the other noises he hadn't bothered to listen to. Rustling of leaves, footsteps, faint words, a couple of screams... Following the voice got him into the cemetary. That was somewhere he didn't think he wanted to be in during the night. But curiousity overcame fear and he continued. When he got in deep into the home of corpses, the trees and tombstones cleared up into a sort of mini-plain. On that wide expanse of flat grass were five female figures spread out, but all facing the one target: a unbelievably large thing that looked like it just crawled out of the swamps and around them, everwhere were miniature versions of it. Suddenly, one of the girls lept forward, and quick as cheetah threw some sort of fireball at the youma. The youma tried a swipe at the girl's hair, but missed. By then, Ken knew it was the Sailor Scouts. He heard about them in the news and even around school, but never really saw them in action til now. Just as quick, another girl with a jaguar's stealth and silence ran up to the thing, and in one swift motion, jumped and was ready to plant the soul of her shoe into it's head with a fierce kick. For a large youma, it had pretty sharp instincts. It turned with light speed and swung his arm toward the oncoming scout, recognized as Jupiter and like a baseball, she was flung toward a tree with a thud. As if it wasn't at all painful, Sailor Jupiter got up, and challenged, "C'mon hotshot! That felt good! Let's see you do it again!" That did it. Something about that made Ken's mind click. Everything was starting to fall into place. All those cancelled dates, those rush exits, the vanishing of Lita and her friends from time to time.... "L-l-lita?!" Ken stuttered. He couldn't beleive that he didn't put this all together sooner. It all made sense. "What're you doing here?!" Sailor Jupiter shouted and stopped dead in her tracks. Those few seconds would have cost her her life if she hadn't been so quick. Out of the corner of her eye, Sailor Jupiter saw the youma ready to pounce and she quickly rolled out of her way. Not a second too soon, because the youma barely touched her boot. "Moon Scepter-" Sailor Moon was already on the job of elliminating the nauseance, but just as she was ready to call out, something struck her hand, making her scepter fly out of reach into some bushes. "Not so fast!" The flying projectile growled as it hit the ground. It was another one of those mini-youmas which were still running around. In the mean time, the large youma started creeping up to the only unarmed one there. Ken just stood there, trying to sort things through and didn't actually register the fact that a seven foot menace was heading his way. At the last minute, just as the youma was about to have another meal, a fierce voice commanded, "Jupiter Thunder Dragon!" Followed by a, "Venus Crescent Beam!" and a, "Mercury Ice Bubbles!" All three combinations were strong enough to knock the youma down, but not out. It snarled at them from the ground and attempted to get up. "Mars Fire-" Sailor Mars knew that this last power was sure to knock the youma out of it's misery. A shreek like none heard before came out of its large throat even before the fire came. In fact, the whole youma sort of melted away minutes before the fire made contact with the empty air. In its place was just a green mossy spot. "Where did he-" Tuxedo Mask took off his hat and scratched his forehead. This was the longest night he had ever been through, and he'd been through a lot. "Hey!" Sailor Jupiter interupted. Something was grabbing her from below. She couldn't move her feet any more. There were some sort of vines or weeds tightly holding on to her, creeping up her legs. Sailor Mercury also noticed it and put on her VR glasses, "It seems to be some primative sort of fern. But it's a hybrid of an animal and a vegetable and-" "Forget the science lecture. We have to find some way to get out of this!" Sailor Mars demanded. She tried to take her shoe off, but after that, the weed only took a strong hold of her foot. "I wanna go home!" Sailor Moon wailed. The vine was now halfway up her body and starting to tie her hands together. Watching the scene before him, Ken felt something. It was as if someone switched on the lights to an attic in which before, he only saw shadows, but now, he saw clear figures...everything. Like a movie put on "Fast Forward", images flashed before his eyes. Brief still pictures of battles, of parties, of everything he couldn't remember before, yet didn't know. Slowly, the images stopped until he could see where he was again. he asked himself, A sudden urge to yell overtook him. If only he could get the words out. Then, like a lava spewing volacanoe, the words erupted from him, "Jupiter Knight Power!" The raw power surged through his veins. He felt it in every pore of his body. His clothes changing wasn't one of the things he was aware of, but more the strength and stamina that overtook him. Something pushed into his hand, a steel sword, then disappeared again. It felt like an eternity, but it was a split second before he stood there, green suit and all. "I'm ba-ack!" Jupiter Knight taunted with a vengeful smile on his lips. He went around skillfully hacking away at all the weeds tying the scouts down. Somehow, after all that time, he still had the perfect aim that took years to build with his sword. Slowly, as he was hacking, a form grew from the fallen weed parts. "He's a perfect fractal in nature!" Sailor Mercury remarked, looking at all the small pieces fitting together to make the big piece: the youma. "So, another sissy boy scout?" The newly formed chia youma taunted. He introduced himself, "They call me Branch. You can call me uncle when I take your body and snap it like a twig." Jupiter Knight raised an eyebrow, then spat, "You guys make me sick! Just when everything was going to be nice and easy, *one* of you guys just have to come and ruin it! Well you know what?! I'm sick and tired of it!" In one swift motion, Jupiter Knight leaped forward with his sword in one hand, in a hacking motion. It made a sickening mushing sound when his sword made contact with the youma's arm. "Hah, this is too easy!" The youma didn't even feel the sword in him. He simply turned fiercely, flinging Jupiter Knight off him and laughed. "These things are getting more obnoxious by the minute!" Sailor Mars growled. "Jupiter Knight, are you up to it?" Sailor Jupiter shouted at him. She hoped he still remembered. "Alright, time to fry you overgrown Chia-pet!" Jupiter Knight ran to Sailor Jupiter and took out his sword. He put his arms around her and held the sword out before them. Sailor Jupiter put her hands on his and started. "Power of Jupiter, I call you to help vanquish this delinquent...." Sailor Jupiter started. "Jupiter Supreme Thunder!" Jupiter Knight finished and his sword acted like a lightning rod, conducting lightning from above into the tip of sword and right at the youma. "Sailor Moom, do your thing!" Sailor Venus reminded. "Moon Scepter Ellimination!" Sailor Moon dusted the youma with plenty help from the others. Already, the sun was peaking over the tops of the skyscrapers. They had been at it for a pretty long amount of time, although it felt like only a few minutes. Luna congradulated the group for their excellent team work and then turned curiouslsy at Jupiter Knight, who had aready de-transformed into Ken. "You know, I still don't get it." Artemis remarked. "There's just no logical explanation for it." Everyone turned to Ami at the mention of "logical". She shrugged and looked quite embarassed that there was something she couldn't explain. "It's wierd. It felt like someone finally turned on the lights. I mean, I knew there were shadows lurking, but when the lights came on, some of the shadows were what I expected them to be, and the others were totally different." Ken, still dumbfounded at the mass memory overload explained. "But can you remember everything now?" Lita asked, putting a hand on his arm. "I think so, I feel better now." "Do you remember how you lost your memory in the first place?" questioned Rei. Ken nodded. Everyone waited silently, expecting an answer. Looking around at the expectant gazes, Ken mentioned, "It's a long story. Why don't we go somewhere to sit down and I'll tell you about it." "Usual place," Lita replied. All of them headed for Lita's apartment complex. ************************************************************************* Boring Stuff aka Author's Notes Sorry this took such a long time to come out. I know some of you are dissappointed by the size of this chapter. I meant for it to be longer, but I guess it's not as long as I wanted. First, I'd like to thank all those people who mailed me and encouraged me to write more on this. You guys were the ones that really wrote this, in a way. Yes, you know who you are. Second, I discovered something. Let me make this subtle into a mathematical equation: sadness & pain = good writting Think about it, Emily Dickenson.....Edgar Allen Poe....all the great writters had a though and painful life. And now I have proof. For the past month, I was actually happy and having fun, which thus meant less time for writting, less time for thinking up plots and ideas because i usually just sit there and type. And see how slow this chapter came out? If you're still reading this, then trust me, you have enough time to write a fanfic too. I mean, you're reading the Author's Notes for goodness sakes, you could do better. Ladyjupiter@sailorjupiter.com **********Copyright 1998 Lady Jupiter (All Rights Reserved)*************
