My eyes behold my grandson, as he lay fast asleep,
his chunky arms clutching his Barney
and his "banky" tangled, and huddled near his chubby naked feet.

And I Smiled

I watched a magnificent Monarch fluttering over, then stopping to perch here and there on my white lantana. Then his wings carried him up in beauty and splendor, around my garden, then beyond my sight...

And I Smiled!

Standing at my sink, I hear the clear, lovely call of a Mocking bird. I look out to see him perched on my lamp post, calling to his mate. But I thought of it as a private concert out my front door. I listened till the singing faded into the neighborhood.

And I smiled!

I'm at the birth of my first grandchild - and every one since... the first child of my first child, and what awe and wonder filled my heart when he was first placed in my arms screaming, then quieted to my crooning voice that spoke to him almost every day inside his mom... He knew my voice, and now studied my face...

And I smiled!

I saw my daughters, four years apart, walking down the aisle to the men they would promise to love for life. I knew the joys and sorrows, the pleasures and the pain they'd face in the years to come. But for "This Moment" all eyes were on her... And I watched as they became ONE, tears of joy running down my face...

And I Smiled!

A surprise knock at the door - a friendly face, a time to catch up over a cup of tea. A time of prayer as we share our hearts, hugs and a promise to return ... soon...though I know it may be months - even years. And as I watch her drive away... my dearly cherished friend - our lives grown apart over the years but our hearts ever one in His love. "See ya soon!" I wave...

And I Smiled!

Chubby little arms wrapped tightly around my neck, Mom's here and it's time for my treasures to go home. Thank you, Lord, time to rest... but honestly I'm so blessed to have them near enough to see regularly, watching them grow and learn and come to know Jesus and His ways... They blow kisses and wave and yell "I wuv you, Nani", and I watch them drive away...

And I Smiled...

The voice of a dearly missed friend calling, just when I need a lift, "long distance" just 'cuz, and we chat like she's right next door. All too soon, time has passed, and we must say those sad words, "good-bye." So we hang up - my hand still touching the phone...

And I Smiled!
