What happens is Mai loses to Malik and nearly dies, I think she's put into a coma at some point, and Jou tries really hard to rescue her. Somewhere in here they have a talk, but just as he's about to succeed Malik shows up. He puts her soul, at least I think it's her soul, in an hour glass and gives them a time limit to save her.
