| DIRTY PAIR |
| Kei and Yuri. The most famous trouble consultants in the 3WA. Not exactly famous for any good reasons. Their ability to destroy buildings, cities, and even whole planets during their missions has earned them the nickname Dirty Pair. They hate it and prefer their original codename the Lovely Angels. A high octane comedy sci-fi series, is one of the most popular anime of all time. Well that is until recently with the advent of shows like love Hina and Noir. The sci-fi comedy genre has gone into cult status, rducing this brilliant series to it's loyal fan base at least for the moment anyway. Luckily the fan base is large enough to sustain it, but it's a shame that newer anime fans aren't discovering a lot of the older good series. Having gone through four main incarnations since the 80's. The original books, the OAV series based on those books along with a movie, the Adam Warren manga (probably the most famous outside of Japan) and the 3 OAV series Flash. There are many debates over which is the best version. The original books and anime had an emphasis on action with the comedy being mainly subtle and quite intelligent in places and whilst the animation is a bit crude by todays standards for characters and plots it was in my opinion the best of the Dirty Pair stuff. The Adam Warren manga is a touch gorier than the original and the language is more harsh, the humour is there and the action is good, but it is not for the easily nauseated. Flash is a remake and pretty good for the first 2 OAV series it retains the humour, but lets up a little on the action side. The first 2 OAV's had continuing plots through their episodes, whilst the third was 5 seperate stories, which were a little too heavy on the comedy in places it seemed to lose some of it's charm. It would have probably worked better if it had been more episodes so you could adjust but it was too short. Overall if you want a good laugh and some adrenaline pumping action scenes you can't go wrong with this brilliant, but lately under-rated series. Review by Alia |
