Rebuild of A-4 after Rocket attack in 1971 Andy Halter from 265th RRC, 101st Airborne (shown in photo to the right), and Jim Arrowood Woodstock from 407th RRD check things out! The 1st of the 5th Infantry stood down in August 1971. Around this time A-4 was severely attacked by rockets. SSG Messenger was the NCOIC at A-4. SPC Bloodworthy was wounded during the attack, Bob Whitenack that same day at A-4, after being on shift all night decided not to go to bed, but have a beer. A 122 mm rocket came through the bunker and went right through his bed. We are standing on top of the rebuilt bunkers. Several other notable events occurred as the 1st of the 5th Infantry departed. The Det had to fend for itself in terms of security. We pulled security from the two bunkers behind the detachment motor pool day and night. We had to fire up people coming through the wire on several occasions. SPC Affholder and I spent a lot of time on the perimeter. We both have stories. SPC Tyndol was shot in the chest, our supply Sergeant, SP5 Dan Hummel and one of our MPs received shrapnel wounds while at LZ Sarge. Our Bunker at LZ Sarge got blown off the hill. NVA sappers came into Quang Tri Combat base and blew up 60 tons of Ammunition. The concussion knocked out the wind shields on jeeps and broke bottles. Shortly after that we moved in with MACV team 155 at the old Quang Tri Combat Base hospital compound. Goodie Goodrich and I built the DETs Comm Center in a Quonset hut in the hospital compound.
