We will start today by labeling different parts of sheep.  Show examples of each breed of sheep (Border Leicester, Rambouillet, Southdown, Suffolk, Friesian, and British).

Ø       Border Leicester: Originated in England.  This breed is found in the northern U.S. and Canada in high rainfall, good pasture areas.  Border Leicester’s yield a long-stapled, lustrous, coarse wool that is much in demand by hand spinners.

Ø       Rambouillet: Developed in France and Germany, the Rambouillet is the foundation of Western U.S. range flocks.  This breed is adaptable to a wide variety of arid range conditions.  Rambouillet produces high-quality fine-wool fleece.

Ø       Southdown: Is one of the oldest sheep breeds, originated in England.  The Southdown is a small to medium-sized.  They are early maturing, adaptable to diverse climate conditions, produce muscular, light-weight carcasses and possess excellent longevity.

Ø       Suffolk: Originated in England.  This is the largest-sized breed in the U.S.  They are raised under a range of climatic conditions.  Suffolk lambs grow rapidly and produce high cutability carcasses.

Ø       Friesian Milk Sheep: This breed is considered to be the world’s highest producing dairy sheep.  They are highly specialized animals and do poorly under extensive and large flock husbandry conditions.  Friesian do not fare well in harsh hot environments.

Ø       British Milk Sheep: This breed was developed in England.  They are the most prolific breed in the United Kingdom.  A milk yield of 650-900 L has been reported during a 300-day lactation.  The milk solids are particularly high.

Ask learners, “What pictures or icons will help you remember the component parts of this information.”

Does anyone know the differences between the breeds of sheep mentioned?

Students will complete the handout as the teacher goes through each of the power point slides.

E-Moment: “Hieroglyphic Moment”.  This allows the students to relate a picture that they have drawn to a word that is mentioned in the lecture.

Application (What will they do with what you taught?)           Anticipated # of Minutes

Key Points

Methods           10 min.

  • Divide the students into groups.  Ask the students to draw a picture that represents the information covered in the lecture and how would you portray the relationship between the different breeds of sheep.

E-Moment: “Picasso Moment”

Evaluation/Summary (How do you know they learned it?)Anticipated # of Minutes

Key Points

Methods

  • What are the different breeds of sheep that we discussed?
  • What is the importance of the breeds?
  • Why might is it important to have the different breeds of sheep?

v      Quiz:  The students will take a short quiz over labeling the parts of sheep discussed in class and the differences between the breeds of sheep.  The quiz will consist of 5-10 fill-in-the-blank questions.

Tomorrow we will discuss the different breeds of goats and the specific purposes of those breeds of goats.
