Sonata for clarinet and piano is the first notable original work of the composer's. Earlier original works were limited to a handful of compositional exercises and one piece for string orchestra.

I. Andante
II. Fugue: Allegro moderato
III. Larghetto
IV. Rondo: Allegro con brio

The first movement is fairly simple and makes use of quartal and quintal harmonies. It is light in character with almost a sort of French flavor.

The second movement is an adoptation of an originial four-voice fugue in g minor and is, as a result, both extremely entergetic and extremely taxing on the performers. Despite its technical challenges, it was performed on 4 May 2003 in a concert of the Rowan Youth Orchestra in Glassboro, New Jersey, by the composer, clarinet, and Mrs Glenda Steffee, piano, and was very well received.

The third movement is basically a simple, peaceful, and flowing clarinet melody over a piano accompaniment which grows slowly. It is the expressive and emotional heart of the piece as a whole. This movement has been performed and offered at various venues by the composer, clarinet, and Kevin Hahn or Christina Olinda, piano.

The fourth movement is an energetic and rhythmically driven rondo drawing on material from the first and second movements as well as new dodecaphonic and tonal materials. It requires impressive techical facility but makes for a rousing finale.
