Pastorale was originally the third and final movement of a sonatina for violin, clarinet, and violoncello, but it was found to stand better by itself. Simple and unassuming, the piece is tonally centered on A-flat but wanders harmonically with a great deal of freedom. The extremely slow tempo, subdued dynamic levels, and gentle counterpoint create an atmosphere of peaceful relaxation. The climax of the piece falls on the golden section on G and is unique in that it is at the quietest dynamic level of the piece except for the end. This structural balance to the piece helps to add to its stability and serenity.
