Extended-validation Certificate

An EV or Extended-validation Certificate is an X.509 certificate that is issued to the owner of a domain for encrypting the traffic to the site. This type of certificate requires the most effort to obtain. In some web browsers the name of the company that name of the company that owns the website is displayed, as in this example from paypal.

Organizations go through a strickter process to prove ownership of the domain. This is also the most expensive type of certificate, in most cases costing almost a thousand dollars per year.
