Silas K Hocking - Her Benny
Deluxe Illustrated Edition - 1890
A New Edition of an Old Classic
This is the classic tale from 1879, of two waif's who sell matches and carry bags to earn a pittance, most of which goes to their drunken father. But after one beating too many for both of them, Benny, the eldest, decides to leave the unhappy home, and along with his sister, Nelly, goes off to see if he can improve their fortunes elsewhere, however slightly. To explain any further would spoil the tale for those who have not read it.
The book is written unapologetically from a Christian perspective, and it colours the book very strongly; as a Christian, this certainly doesn't bother me, but you may feel differently. As for the author himself, a Cornish Minister; Silas K Hocking achieved the absolutely amazing feat of being the first author to sell a million copies of a book - in an author's own lifetime. This distinction is necessary, not just to be fair to the likes of Old Charlie, Bram the Man, Tommy H, Em', Chara and Annie and their ilk, who admittedly have far outstripped the Good Silas when taking posthumous sales into account, but to indeed highlight the old man's prolific sales when still with us. This is something which his goodly near-peers ( maybe a few years between Silas and the others - but there was still horse-cack all over the cobbles. ), most certainly did not achieve.
Although many editions have been published under license for many years now, 2006 sees the book totally out of copyright, and this is how I am able to re-publish this title.
The book is now available from many places, and some links to some retail sites follow, as well as my affiliate link to Amazon.co.uk. Just click on any or all of them for more information, just clicking to see does not commit you to buy so no worries there.
