In
the audio commentary, director Gregory Hoblit describes the making of
"Untraceable" as "workmanlike." The same can be said for
this dispiriting DVD package. With four special features, viewers get a solid
if repetitious behind-the-scenes look into the cybercrime thriller. The
nuts-and-bolts extras may appeal to film students and horror fanboys, but won't
have much value to general audiences.
"Tracking Untraceable"
features interviews with producers Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Hawk Koch
as well as screenwriters Robert Fyvolent and Mark Brinker. All provide insight
into the film's conception, but it's Allison Burnett, who was brought on to
rewrite the script, who provides the most interesting commentary. He delves
into the theme of the internet run amok and why he wanted the story to be a
cautionary tale.
"The Personnel Files"
is a straightforward cast rundown with Lane, Hanks et. al. all discussing why
they enthusiastically boarded the project. "The Blueprint of Murder"
provides a less-than-scintillating look at the film's production: Commentary by
production designer Paul Eads and set decorator Cindy Carr reveals the film was
originally supposed to be set in Baltimore with interiors shot in Portland,
Oregon, but Portland won out overall because it was cheaper to shoot and locals
were accommodating.
The final feature "The
Anatomy of Murder," breaks down the gruesome special effects on the
victims, with commentary by makeup artist Mathew Mungle. At six minutes, this
one's the shortest; the other three clock in around 15 minutes each.
Blu-ray version includes HD
picture-in-picture bonus commentary, "Beyond the Cyber Bureau."
AC-3, Dolby, subtitled, widescreen. Running time: 101 Minutes.
